Totally new at this, just tried playing around with coinbase but says i wont get my transaction until oct 1st. Is this normal with purchases? How do I get BTC sooner?
It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

You may have some luck visiting howtobuybitcoins.info. You can also find a local exchange where individuals around you will sell them. I have had success with this in the past.

Be very, very careful about purchasing coins from other forum members. There are educational materials posted throughout the boards (the ones in the 'Scam Accusations' sub-forum come to mind). They are incredibly helpful and will mitigate your exposure to cons and unscrupulous individuals.

Try localbitcoins.com and only buy from established traders with good reputations.

Face to face is odd at first but actually works quite well (and the coins are generally a touch cheaper that way).

I like bitcoin so far, it's a great idea.

I know you can buy bitcoin on btcquick.com, but don't be deceived, it's not very quick at all.

Hopefully this company mentioned above can improve their customer service quickly badum tch! pun intended.

I may look into local bitcoin if btcquick doesn't provide me with better service soon, although I would prefer to ONLY use btcquick if it were quick!

Alas, we dream today, hopefully that dream can come true in the future.

Out of curiosity, are you needing to spend them soon? Or just want to know you actually own them (which is understandable)?

Someone mentioned BTC-E, but I think funding that site isn't very easy. Bitstamp, CampBX, new CoinMKT, and many others would probably be an easier choice (plus many others, I'm sure).

I guess its a sense of both. I want to spend it to actually get some experience to better grasp the whole concept of BTC. Ive spent some time reading up on it and get the general concept but until I actually try it out it feels very foreign to me.

Ill try these other areas to get some BTC, I'm in San Francisco, I've tried looking on localbitcoin but it doesnt seem I have that many options as a lot of the transaction require a larger sum than im comfortable with at this time. Are transfers from direct vendors faster than these larger sites? I hope not all transactions are 1 week long, seems like a huge hindrance to the popularity of this currency.

Yeah I'm not a fan. I prefer P2P / localbitcoins. Deal with reputable people in the marketplace forum.  Smiley
