In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member300
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

Useful infographics

Forum users have helpfully created some infographics to explain the merit system:
paxmao's infographic
ibminer's infographic
8Habits's infographic
JetSet11's infographic
zentdex's infographic
alia_armelle's infographic

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

There are stats here, and you can find someone's merit summary by clicking the "merit" link on their profile.

I think this is the one you are looking for?

many users are saying that Googe post reply will earn you that but no one is sending and no one receiving. I feel it is like a dead system.

Around 8 months after your beginning day in the forum, October 30, 2017, 04:59:45 PM, you have not ever known how to use Forum Search Function (please take it easy because it's just my guess).
You didn't noticed that you are replying to post which was made in February. This thread was just unnecessary bumped. I'm not sure that OP learned how to use search, but he was already tagged as a copy paster.

A necro-bump with a useless reply. A full quote to bulk up the reply. Both of those are enough for me to put you on ignore.

243 posts and not one merit. Carry on like this, and you will make it to 1000 posts with no merit.

This is kind of like the evolution of SEO, not to go on a tangent. I think they're similar.

I'll keep it brief; it's a matter of usefulness. How much though are you putting into your posts? When the reader see what you wrote, are they looking for a way to pay you back?

That's what you want. It keeps the forum useful.

I think that getting Merits is a difficult thing. I thought that if you write some original articles seriously, someone will give you the Merits, but the fact is not that simple.
However, in any case, you must be careful to publish some articles, so it is possible to gain Merits. Otherwise, there is no hope.

merit can be increased by the quality of your post. if your contents are good anyone from bitcoin talk can reward you smerits. but here the problem is not everyone practice it. they dont even know smerits wont affects their merits.

I think to get Merit you have to make a good post and solve the problem from the forum members, or you can provide information that forum members need to know, I have not made it yet but after becoming Jr.Member I will make a good post and quality.

What did you say?
Did you use Google translator for your thread?
At some extent, I feel hard to catch all your ideas.
Next time, you should improve your thread's quality, at least English grammar first.
I think we need to make a post but surely that post is we can learn and the main topic is their.

No need to repeat such boring words again.
There are hundreds of merit beggars talked about it repeatedly almos everyday.
I think to get Merit you have to make a good post and solve the problem from the forum members, or you can provide information that forum members need to know, I have not made it yet but after becoming Jr.Member I will make a good post and quality.

i love the idea of not to focus just on how you get MERITS in here, the thing that is more important is that how you get the good topic and contribute something for the forum.

Merit feature is launched just a month ago and it will take time to inculcate the same so we can expect anywhere between 6 to 8 months from now for the members to use it in a natural manner. As merit points depend on the quality of the post, you should focus on contributing to the forum in a better way. Merit is like a Facebook like, you can't buy it or force someone to do it on your posts, everything will happen naturally till then focus on quality content.

It is quite different from Facebook likes, Facebook likes are easier being that someone that joined same day can get and give it but merits on btt, you are solely at the mercy of has it to give out and with the amount of people joining here daily as newbies, merits will increasingly become scarce
