I'm looking to pick up a new desk fan for helping to cool the two 6990's in my main rig and just thought I'd ask if you guys who are using them had any suggestions on particular brands and models of fans you've found to work well for this type of application.
I have a 9" table fan now that pushes a good amount of air and drops my 6990's temps a solid 10C but it vibrates the desk quite a bit when set on high so I was looking at getting something larger in the 12-16"+ range that pushes high CFM while still being quiet enough to sleep with running since the rig is in my bedroom.
What type of fans are some of the rest of you guys using on these hot running cards?

Thanks for the suggestion but that thing will be louder than the fans on these 6990's at 48 dB and it won't push anywhere near the CFM of a table fan.

I use a cheap 20" box fan blowing at the side of my two tower cases. This lowers the temps about 10C, mostly because the airflow on the MSI 6970 Lightning sucks balls (particularly in the bottom slot.)
I'm planning on taking the MBs out of the case, stacking one above the other with really long standoffs, and setting the fan up to blow across the pair of them.

Is the power consumption of big fans still worth using them instead of fans made specificly for computer use?

You lose around 20% efficiency stepping the voltage down from 120V to 12V to run a computer fan.

Not sure if this will work well, it will help a little but the air will be distributed unless you make it so close to the GPU's.

You lose around 20% efficiency stepping the voltage down from 120V to 12V to run a computer fan. The efficiency difference between a high efficiency PC PSU and the AC fan might also make up for the difference though.

Im using 120mm Deltas at 12V, they are Loud (But not louder then the Graphics Cooler at 100%), but with 5500 RPM, they are very fast, and Push everything right out of the Case.
Greetings, Frog

Do you have you GPUs in an case/enclosure? The 6990's central fan tends to suck in its own heat from the rear end. Using ventilation tunnels made from cardbox, I was able to drop the temperature by 15°C.

You think it wont, but it has enough draw to pull cigarette smoke 5 feet across a room. Trust me. Its small but its fierce
