Has anyone had any issues with Windows 10 v1709 with AMD Adrenalin 18.2.3 detecting 1 less GPU?

I have tried 3-6 GPUs and it didnt matter what order, there is always 1 GPU not detected - ie. not even in Device Manager saying invalid driver or faulty, just nothing!

Yes I have done DDU several times without success and no I have not tried 2 GPU.

I will try with EthOS tonight/tomorrow and see if that can detect 6, however thought I'd ask before I try a different OS.

there are several possibilities if that happens, you can tried it :

1. check the PSU cable for VGA card and power riser.
2. Use Atikmdag - Patcher so that the GPU has been modified BIOS can be read.
Good luck bro Wink

I have two rigs, one with 8 cards and the other has 10 and im running win 10 pro updated to 1709 with absolutely no problem. First I would remove all drivers and install the crimson blockchain driver from AMD website.  How do you know windows is the culprit? Id suspect the motherboard bios OR your power supply wiring to the risers.  How many gpu risers do you have on one sata cable train? Is your sata cable plugged into the sata outlet of your power supply or the peripheral outlet (assuming you have modular power supply).  Id put no more than 3 maybe 4 depending on what cards are used on a sata train cable.

Which mobo (full model reference to check its controller) ? mining bios ?
Is the problem related to adrenalin drivers only ? were all GPU working with any previous version of gpu driver ?
Is fast startup disabled in your win 10 ?
Can you identify physically which GPU is not being detected and test another GPU on this slot ?

Is Gen 1 or Gen 2 for PCIE forced in the bios ? Above 4G decoding enabled ? Fast boot disabled (not the same as the one in win10)?

Trying an other OS is a good start point to see if the OS is causing the issue (I use a ubuntu installed on a USB Key for this purpose).

@mshordja
windows 7 doesn't support new generation mobo/CPU.

@chandrarahmadewa
If the GPU does not appear in device manager, Atikmdag can't do anything

Check your Risers and PSU cables first.

Switch them around and see if it the same GPU/Slot or if it is a different one each time depending on Riser or PSU cable.

Then change OS to Windows 7 IMO.

Also make sure your MOBO has flashed up to date with the latest drivers and softspec.

Merit me or don't.

Power Supply
  • 2400 Watt 92% Server PSU 240V
  • 4 Separate Rails with each rail having 2 GPU and 2 Riser
  • Assume 140W p/GPU - definitely below 50%

Risers & Cables
  • Checked and all Replaced
  • Swapped and Re-Seated all GPU
  • Tried with 3 GPU in different positions and PCIe slots - no difference

Windows
  • Only tried Windows 10 v1709
  • I had tried 2 months ago on a different rig without issues
  • 60GB Virtual RAM

AMD Drivers
  • Only tried 18.2.3 on this rig
  • Downloading - DDU - Installing v17.11.4

MOBO BIOS Settings
  • 4G Enabled
  • Gen 2 for PCIE
  • Fast Boot Disabled

Also note all GPU has stock BIOS so atikmdag-patcher-1.4.6 wouldn't be useful.

I do not know if its Windows as I only use Windows to Update and test settings - not actually a live rig. I have setup Windows in past with 6-8 GPU no issues which is why its annoying me and also on the same board.

Anyways - DDU and installing 17.11.4 currently... see how this turns out!

Did a DDU and it appears only 5 devices are detected. I think I have a faulty Mobo IMO!

It's not a faulty mobo. Read below.

It's something else. I've had exact same problem, where i tried rolling back about 5 times, and then each time it all works.
Every time it auto-installs update, 1 gpu always disappers, doesn't matter how many connected, always n-1 (unless just 1 in system).
By the way I have the Nvidia GPU's 1080Ti's and an H81 Pro BTC mobo.

You can prevent issues by changing your lan connection to "metered connection" (google it). This will prevent the updates from coming.

Also, I assume this will be fixed if you do a clean install of new windows version, as all my other systems are on latest version and work fine.

This rig "was" a clean install - however steps were:

  • Clean Windows 10 v1709
  • Windows Update to 26 Feb 2018
  • Disabled Windows Update Services
  • Did not put system into Metered Mode
  • Connected 1-6 GPU
  • Didnt see how many Display Adapters were detected
  • Installed AMD Drivers
  • ... here I am!!!

In the past when setting up Windows I never had issues doing Windows Updates and never had any other issues as I would simply disable the Windows Update services which disables most updates.

Nonetheless, Im going to setup an EthOS USB and just do a simple run and see if that detects the 6 GPU - if that does detect 6, then yes its a Wonderful Windows Update issue yet again wasting my time.

Will keep this thread posted just in case anyone else have a similar issue.

@chandrarahmadewa
If the GPU does not appear in device manager, Atikmdag can't do anything

Atikmdag patcher isn't magic that will instantly be showing your undetected cards. It would be bypassing your driver signature, so the modded cards would be easy to detect by the system. If don't want to patch another feature such as pixel clock etc, just rename it to atikmdag-patcher-bios.exe then only bios signature would be patched. Restart your system, and the system will more easy to detect undetected mod cards.
