Say you don't have mining-specific hardaware, but just a bunch of CPUs. Say that electricity comes for free, and so you mine.

What would you mine?

You're making every noobs mistake by not listing what kinda CPU's
But a good thing to cpu mine is ELectronium for now.

I see some stupid suggested you to mine monero. If you monero you ekll get one menero after one year or some more years too. Instead of buying waste cheap CPU you go with buying GPU with decent hash rates.
Radeon and Nividia series cards best for mining.
If wanna make profit with the free electricity you will get into GPU mining that is the right way.

For processors there are a lot of coins, Noah would choose from these three:
Electronium, Monero, Hodlcoin. It makes sense if you have a lot of processors. It is better to use GPU or ASIC to the same you have free electricity)  Wink

some coins that you can mine by CPU are:
- Aeon
- IntenseCoin
- Electroneum
- Fantom coin

But don't get your hopes to high, as you will not get rich of it, nor make big profit

What would you mine?

I would mine the below coins. I am already mining the below coin switching one to the other with Nicehash. Really worth and happy with the output.

ETH
Zcash
Litecoin
Neo and
Dash

Well in my opnion unless u get powerful cpus like the ryzen or i7s , cpu mining will be more of a hastle then profit even with free electricity, unless u have a large bunch of them already like 30 or more . Even then to ROI the motherboards , the hdds ,the rams is gonna be very difficult , and even managing them and making sure they are cool enough is gonna be taxing , its better to do an acutal job .
I am currently mining electrenum with my ryzen 1700x in my mining rigs
But yeah if u go with cpu mining u should also look at storj or other hdd mining to increase ur already really low profit Smiley

you don't describe your specification the CPU. mining, not enough only have free electric but a hardware must compatible to do mining. useless you have free electricity if your hardware not compatible, only would getting a CPU is broken. except, CPU server such 1U/2U/5U has 12 or 24 threads, those devices can to mine ETN or XMR and sure a profit.

Folks, piggybacking on this thread. I just bought a new computer with mining proceeds. It's not a mining rig, but it is pretty powerful. CPU - AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X, 16GB DDR4-3000 and a 1060 with 6Gb. With this in mind, what currency(s) do you recommend me to mine?

Thanks,
Frank

ETN or XMR coins but depends on a spec of CPU such Celeron, i3, i5, and i7, those the type processor making different a hashrate and profit you will take. if you have more CPUs, of course those can make a profit.

As long as the electricity is free and the CPU is for disposal, go on.
As they said Monero(XMR) and Electroneum(ETN) are both cryptonite coins which are less preferred by GPU miners the best choice.
Depending on the pool's luck and availability, either one will give you fractions of a coin in every payout. Just don't even try to solo mine those coins with a single CPU.

Zcash is good for a single GTX1060 rig. "315-325 Sol/s on GTX 1060" Using BMiner
Nicehash will accept your rig too (not the OP's rig), if you want to earn Bitcoin. You can choose to mine equihash for the GPU, Ethash/Cryptonite for the CPU and get paid in BTC.
