I believe a lot of you have used the search function in bitcointalk before, but maybe not all people know all the tricks to make your search more accurate/effective. Today I will try to write a simple tutorial about more details on bitcointalk search. You can access the search easily by clicking the " SEARCH" tab on the top of the forum. There are two types of search that is available on bitcointalk, Google Search and Forum Search. (If you directly use the search bar on the top right side of the forum, it is default to be forum search.) Google Search Advantages of Google Search:
- Google search is generally more accurate.
- The forum's own search engine are rate-limited, if you use google search it won't cost a lot of forum resources.
- Google search has a lot of predefined search parameters which you can use.
- Google search does not have time limitation between different searchs
Disadvantages of Google Search:
- You will only be able to search public sections using google search. For non-public sections, such as Investigations, you won't see in google search.
- You cannot search within a specific board using google search.
Some Tips for Using Google Search:
- To search for exact match, you can put a word or phrase inside quotes. For example:
"earn bitcoin" - If you want to combine search, you can use OR. For example:
bitcoin OR litecoin - You can use * in your word or phrase where you want to leave a placeholder. For example:
best * - If you want to exclude certain word from your search, you can put - before the word you want to exclude. For example:
earn bitcoin -faucet Forum Search Advantages of Forum Search:
- You will be able to define which board to search in. Just click the "Choose a board to search in, or search all" link on the search screen, you can select one or multiple boards to refine your search.
- You will be able to see non-public sections using forum search, such as Investigations.
- You will be able to define search order and message age using forum search.
Disadvantages of Forum Search:
- Sometimes forum search is not as accurate as google search.
- If you search too quickly using forum search, you will get an error like "You are searching too quickly. Wait 6 seconds. "
Some Tips for Using Forum Search:
- You can use the "Message age" option to define the age of the messages you want to search. For example, you can define the search to be within 0 and 10 days.
- You can also set different search orders to suit your needs. Search order available:
- Most relevant results first
- Largest topics first
- Smallest topics first
- Most recent topics first
- Oldest topics first

Really good guide. While searching for something specific with the forum search engine I often get server errors so I gave up using it, but the google search is pretty accurate. I'll list your guide in my Comprehensive guide to Bitcointalk if you don't mind.

Yeah I also generally use google search, as I can use a lot of predefined parameters, and the search result is in the format that I am familiar with.

If I could leave you another tip, I might suggest that you do not need to quote the entire post, You can either just reply, or simply quote the section of the post that you are directly replying to. Also, this thread has had over 3-months since it has last been bumped. I'm going to assume that you search function lead you to this thread, so you couldn't have been having too much trouble . Normally, people dislike posts that are "This helped me" kind of posts, because there are endless newbies spamming similar posts for malicious reasons; it hits a nerve around here. I would suggest shooting OP a PM, unless you have more to add to the discussion. A friendly "thank you, this helped" PM is much more pleasing than a "Thank you" post-reply, if that makes sense.

1 more tip using Google search: + When you search by Google, put bitcointalk.org at the end of your words. Example: "Ann thread bitcointalk.org". So all result will show from Bitcointalk. If you want to find more detail or more information, put more words. Google will go through only bitcointalk.org to find result

Thank you! Your publication is very useful to me. I used to think that when a forum recommends me to use Google search, it just sends me from the forum to Google because the forum doesn't have what I need.

You can use duckduckgo.com as well. By not tracking your searches and not tracking you anywhere you visit on the internet, I would recommend using it instead of google. They use the same codes as google. Just enter the terms you want to search followed by: site:https://bitcointalk.org So if you want to search for satoshi, it would look like this: satoshi site:https://bitcointalk.org satoshiYou can search in specific sections too. You just need to put the right number of the section. Altcoin discussion is number 67. site:https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=67 EthereumBounties is number 238 site:https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=238 pay me toDevelopment & Technical Discussion is number 6 site:https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=6 To find discussions about fee on Technical Discussion fee site:https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=6
