1070ti will be your best bet.  Its more versatile since it doesn't have GDDR5X memory.

Depends on the price difference--personally I'm considered selling my 1080s and replacing with 1070tis. Don't know exact number of cuda cores but I think 1070ti is close and I feel like it has a bit greater range for the price (I got mine 450-470 before "the shortage)--that is they can kill it on equihash and do ok on ethash too because (at least mine( have Gddr5 instead of 5x memory like the 1080s.

But, I do like the 1080s on equihash. Seems like the 1070Tis actually beat them slightly on lyra2v though with +100 core on both.

I have been running both on a rig for over a month so can provide some good insight for you...

- 1080's will generally get about 10% better (about 550 vs 500) hash-rate on Equihash coins, like BTG, ZEN & ZEC
- 1070ti's will generally get 25-30% (30.5 vs 24) better on ETHash coins like ETH, ETC, Music, etc PLUS, can dual mine DCR, etc (although dual mining not as good with these as with 4xx or 5xx AMD cards) but still, it's a nice bonus

With profitability of all coins down at the moment, but Equihash taking the bigger hit, ETH dual mine has been more profitable, so if this trend continues, 1070ti would be the easy choice.  In fact, unless Equihash coins move much higher in relation to ETHash coins, 70ti will be way better long term.  I know there are other algos to consider but these seem to be the most consistently profitable. Bottom line, if I could do it I would trade my 2 1080s for 2 70ti's in a heartbeat, even though the 80's have higher retail value.

It depends which coin you would like to mine. Both of those cards are good, I understand your indecision. If it was me, personally I would chose 1070ti. Its cheaper and its better in mining ETH. I had 1070ti on my computer, and have done some mining with it. I can say that i was satisfied with its performance. This is what I would recommend, so go for 1070ti.

At MSRP on each, I'd go 1070 ti - but it's a very close choice, you won't go wrong either way.

Don't get a 1070 ti to mine ETH with, get a 1070 - even lower cost for the SAME hashrate.

At the moment in my country 1070 Ti is 20 dollars more expensive than 1070

the cheapest Palit GeForce GTX1070 DUAL 8GB DDR5  - €656.68
the cheapest MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Aero 8GB GDDR5 - €678.58
the cheapest KFA2 GeForce GTX 1080 EX OC 8GB - €689.00

and the choice is obvious - 1070 Ti in overclock +800 33.5 Mh / s
(i'll try more - 35 Mh / s but 85 C and very unstable - Palit without backsplate),
and also 1070 Ti more recent model and more easily sold on market of second-hand things in the future
1070 Ti - Claymore - ETH dual mine - and go)
in general it is an eternal problem to compare the technical characteristics of products, but soon it will be easier, there will be a platform (at my signature), it will be possible to compare any card and understand what is better in 5 minute)

I have 2x 1080 and 1x1070'ti,  although 1080 has more shading units than 1070'ti, for me 1070'ti has a bit better of performance than 1080. especially to mine NeoScrypt coins.

Enlightened me please, I thought that memory has great impact (in most cases) on mining efficiency. So tell me, in which way is fps related to mining. As far as I know fps stands for "frame per second" , so why do we need to look on fps when we talk about mining?

1070ti performs better on overclock (due to default core clock and memory material type), and considering the price difference and electricity consuming(though it is not too big now), 1070ti is better

If you're planing to also have option to mine ethash algo coins (ethereum, pirl, etc, ella, ...) better buy would be 1070TI. 1080 is using faster and newer GDDR5X but also with larger memory latencies which pretty much impacts memory intensive algos such as ethash.

1070TI is always better then a 1080. But a 1080TI is better then a 1070TI. You need to calculate by Sols/watt. And the 1080 draws to much power and has alot of heat output. The 1070ti is overall better at everything compared to the 1080.

In general not the same but it's related since more gpu cores/higher bandwidth gives more fps it does also give higher hashing speeds.

--ypsi
fps could have an impact on mining or just a Game ?, I do not think before, those the GPU has a different fps between 1080 and 1070'ti.

For me it is just very confusing to measure efficiency of mining based on fps that GPU can provide. I understand that if card is stronger we would get more fps, but for me its really not necessary to measure it in fps. I guess its same for other people, and that is why we look on GPU's specifications and not on fps that GPU can provide.

@ypsi, knew that, but still thanks for answering.  Cheesy

I'd say grab 1070ti, the better choice, imo. i have two of them in my home pc. the performance difference is about 5-7% ( 1080 is faster) and the price difference about 10% (1070ti is cheaper)

I would give my vote for 1080, in my subjective opinion, they are less glitchy, although in depending from the manufacturer.

MSI Aero blower-model cards have VERY VERY BAD cooling - worse than the Founder's Edition.
I refuse to consider buying any more of those.

MSI cards IN GENERAL in my experience tend to have poor cooling compared to cards by other manufacturers in the "same class".
Their only saving grace is that they DO appear to use ball bearing fans in most or all models.

If you run them both at their most EFFICIENT TDP settings (106 watts give or take a couple), the 1080 has the same to a hair WORSE hashrate on ZEC, depending on specific models and ability to OC.
The 1080 starts pulling ahead around the 120 watt level or so, but it never manages 10% better hashrate at the SAME TDP as a "same model" 1070 ti.

fps is completely unrelated to mining, as it's a Game terminology and the work behind it is largely Floating Point where mining work is 100% Integer + data transfers.

Get a 1070 ti. Its much more efficient.

But if you can get a 1080 ti for decent price that would be better.

It would depend on your power situation, and how much you could get the card for.

I have both models, more brands and imho 1070ti is far better on mining than 1080.
Also, seems that cooling is much better on TI series.
Also, if electricity is a problem, try to find 1070ti with just 1x8pin.
It will consume less watt but also less hashrate(e.g 520 sol/s compared with 550 sol/s with 1x8pin+1x6pin)

1070ti is more versatile miner compared to 1080. 1080is good at equihash type of algo but not dagger hashimoto which relies on memory.

No, it depends on what brand. For me, the 1080ti super jetstream and 1070 ti super jetstream are the same cool cards unlike 1070 dual that gives me low hashrate and it's too hot even you set the fan to 100% I tested them and never buy them again because in the daytime the hashrate is dropping almost 20%

1070 ti super jetstream or any brand that gives lower temp is better and you can get lower power consumption than 1080ti

Not a good choice if you choose 1080 it's expensive and not efficient. 1070ti will be the best choice.

This is a critical point--the GDDR5X is not as effective with Dagger--so if OP isn't going to mind ethash coins, no issue, but if he wants that option 1070 ti as others have pointed out.

You have that reversed. The 1080ti is more electric, but more hash.

As for hashes per watts, the 1070ti is the most efficient.
