Yes, the only way to recognize them form "regular: R9 290X will be to read BIOS with GPU-Z. Now every R9 280X is using Tahiti XT2 GPU. I hope they will have smaller VGPU, something in the range 1,09-1,13V would be nice.

All I've heard so far indicates that it's a lottery to get the XTL or XT2 if you buy a 280X right now. Some posts say only HIS and MSI so far.

I haven't heard of anyone with one in hand, so I don't think anybody has an idea if it's better or worse. Gibbo's definition of worse off is probably based on how high he can the GPU, not hash rate.

Going through the convo again, it's possible for the XTL to be a less leaky chip (easier to undervolt, less power, decreased heat, cannot clock as high).

I looked at the LTC mining hardware comparison. Fastest hashing 7970 is at 1085/1500 w/ a voltage of 1.1 (undervolted). That same clock speed should be achievable easily with a XTL, as hashrates are not dependent on hitting 1300MHz on air.

A used 7970 is going for around $200. You will get between 700-800 KHs mining ltc.  A new R9 280X is going cost you $300 or more for the same hash rate.  Cheaper to get the 7970.
