You require a quantity of merit to rank up.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

Earning that amount of merits shows that your account had been productive since merit is given to an individual who've been useful as a member to the forum and shares useful things around when you have soon then it means you've been productive so far. (PS don't mine my merit count--haha)

What does it mean? It means that you have learnt to read the stickies and the threads of the boards, and you have realised that starting the 100th thread about an overdone topic will not make you any friends, will restrict your ability to rank up, and will clog the index to prevent worthwhile posters from getting the exposure they deserve.

-----

Not all those who have 100+ merits are earned through constructive and useful posts some are from abuse or trade merits, having much merit doesn't mean  you are productive.

You need information to earn merits and you need merit to rank up.

Those earned merits are indications which are proven that a certain post of yours is understandable hence english is not your native language.

I understand merit is basically a thumb up (or Like) that other members give you when they find your posts useful and want to like/thank for your contribution. That means more merits equal to more contribution, mostly.

Every rank has its own merit requirement and the figure you  see 10,100 and so forth are the minimum requirement to have before acquiring that rank. It is only newbie and junior member that don't need any merit requirement to obtain.

If you have 10 merit with 60 activities you can be a Member. If you have 100 merit with 120 activities you can be a Full Member. If you have 20, 50 merit with 60 or more activities you are a Member too. Then you need merit+activities to upgrade your account. Please read this Merit & new rank requirements official thread for more information.

Different numbers of merit can make your upgrade to different levels.
But getting Merit is too difficult now, and it's hard for people to get Merit.

Hi! First, there is not such thing as "merit status" if I got this system correctly (only if we are talking about "merit source" status, but that`s a whole another conversation). Second, you do need merit as well as certain activity number to rank up after "Jr. Member" status and TryNinja placed a full table with all info about ranks and merit needed to rich it. So, merit by itself do not grant you status growth, to up it you need both activity and merit to rich certian levels.

How do earn merit?
The most wide spread answer to this - you make good, quality posts that contains useful information for other. Also I would add that in order to get merit poster should know and respect forum rules and other forum members. Then, if your answers will be good and valuable enough for others - you will get merit. And of course you should watch Beginners&Help board for threads with words like "merit award" title, mostly started by merit sources as Jet Cash.
