Hi everyone.

I know it might not sound a really good idea, or may no one agree with me, but I think it can (at least to some extent) reduce the spam threads popping up every day in every section/board of the forum.

We all know, of course because we see it all the time, that every new and useless thread carrying a thought/question that makes no sense at all is created by someone within the ranks of Brand New and Jr. member. Such threads give other people around them a chance to start spamming it with their useless replies. Thus, a thread started with a baseless argument ends up receiving over 100 pages of shit. And we are not talking about just one, but they are in hundreds, increasing everyday with a quite good pace. The users get tired of reporting, and the mods get tired of deleting them. So why not stop this all at once?

So, the basic idea that I propose to stop all this, is to restrict accounts below "Member" rank from creating new threads in most of the sections/boards, excluding a few like "Beginners & Help" or some other where they can freely post anything they wish as these boards are made specially for noobs and to help them. Doing so will absolutely reduce a very large number of useless threads started in almost every single thread of this forum.
It can obviously be implemented with changes, but I just wanted to propose the basic idea.

Suggestions/arguments are welcome.

This is something that I've suggested on several occasions. In fact I suggested that very new members should be restricted in posting in some threads as well.

I think these are both good ideas
It sometimes looks like the OP of some threads doesnt know how to or doesnt want to use the search function in the forum.
There are so many threads thate essentially duplicates of other ones.

This thread is a classic example of why there should be restrictions.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3152896.0

Although it probably wouldn't work in Meta, as one of the functions of this board is to help members recover lost or blocked accounts.

Maybe we should just ban any thread that has the word 'merit' in its title or first post. Smiley

This is something that I've suggested on several occasions. In fact I suggested that very new members should be restricted in posting in some threads as well.

Here:
restrict accounts below "Member" rank from creating new threads

Any account having a rank below "Member" should be restricted, and that includes very new members as well, of course.

It sometimes looks like the OP of some threads doesnt know how to or doesnt want to use the search function in the forum.
There are so many threads thate essentially duplicates of other ones.

Exactly. Eventhough every little information about the things a new member would want to know are already present in some (or many, sometimes) old thread, and most of them are even pinned in those boards, but they still post new threads asking about the same thing that is repeatedly asked about 200 times before.

This thread is a classic example of why there should be restrictions.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3152896.0

There are hundreds of them. Someone would run out of space if starts to gather all of them at one place. The only way to stop them permanently is to restrict their accounts. If you want to kill a tree, you need to cut its roots. Cutting its branches won't help as it grows 2 more if you cut one.

i think the best idea is  let the mods  do the job and add more mods for specific section  to monitor the response of many new comers.   because if you restrict the account below member you put a limit  to them. as far as i know this is a forum that every body can share and can learn about bitcoin even there has many garbage threads, their account is new, evrybody here is equal. dont make their world become small.   how can you motivate them if you restrict their account. you dont the talent of every new comers here. how they can earn a merit from that specific section they want to post a thread if you restrict them.  sorry but i dis agree.

I do accept. But at times members do create a valuable threads. The threads can be reviewed before its published. But as you say, 70 to 90 percent of threads are created in 'Discussion' sections by member and blow rank holders. Lets not restrict anyone here. Lets be different in crypto The therads can be over looked.

Can't agree OP, you may think that all from seeing threads in sections like Bitcoin Discussion, Trading Discussion and etc.
But if you look into altcoin mining section, I think restriction for accounts below Member won't be good idea. For example I need help ASAP, I come here and create thread, I can't see anything near to spam in creating thread for help in mining hardware and etc.
I think it's still better to report threads....

Maybe add a new benefit to Copper Member?
Those who bought Copper Member are allowed to create topic, other than that only Member and above can post a new topic.
This won't cut spam to zero as dedicated spammers will buy Copper Member anyway, but it should reduce them (and additional funds for Forum) Roll Eyes
There will be a few sub-forum that are excluded from this rules like Meta, Beginner, and Bitcoin & Technical Support

i think the best idea is  let the mods  do the job and add more mods for specific section  to monitor the response of many new comers.   because if you restrict the account below member you put a limit  to them. as far as i know this is a forum that every body can share and can learn about bitcoin even there has many garbage threads, their account is new, evrybody here is equal. dont make their world become small.   how can you motivate them if you restrict their account. you dont the talent of every new comers here. how they can earn a merit from that specific section they want to post a thread if you restrict them.  sorry but i dis agree.

Sections*  Grin

Absolutely, but maybe just allow one topic in some other sections outside beginners and help, off-topic, etc... just because there can be someone who knows his stuff. I've said this before and nullius is the great example of that "one-two topics weekly" for new guys.

Need some spare btc for a new PC that can at least run Adobe Dreamweaver.

Deciding whether thread is spam or not is very subjective, even this thread can be spam thread to some other user, so that is not a wise decision to do that just to stop spam.

Then how can they rank up if they cant even post on an existing thread. I thought limiting the creation of threads for newbies will be a good idea but not even for replying.
As for them to focus on reading and understanding how this forum really works this would be a great rule for them because as we all know, there are no other new things to be discussed here for the reason it has all been created and all they'll just have to do is to search for it.

It is actually good move when implement it but still there are problems unable to resolved future.

We are seeing many people reporting about the account hacking here in this section with the newbie alt account.
Then when the transaction issue or some problems in wallet. It should be open for everyone to ask the query and doubts by creating new threads on concern section. If not able to create the thread. Then they will wake up the dead threads in this forum which has been created for the same doubts he/she has now.
Then newbies should also welcome to this forum for asking any question. We should not stop them in exploring blockchain technology and bitcoin.

Nah I think that's a little bit extreme. And what what exactly do you mean by "some" threads, how would one decide which topics newbies can post in and which not. Tryantt's suggestion is better to restrict them in some sections for instance bitcoin discussion where spam is out of control.

Maybe we should just ban any thread that has the word 'merit' in its title or first post. Smiley
Lol yeah would definitely agree on that.

This is not a bad idea in general but there are many cons as well. For example new ANNs often are posted by newbies.
The Copper member is what can solve the gap here. Now it's only used for newbies to post images and I think remove some restrictions in sending PMs. It can be used to give you access to write in a threads and sections restricted for newbies for example.
With the income from all those copper members, more Mods can be hired and there will be more control.

I do not support this change suggested because:

1) Most of these threads that look spam to you are made by new members who have very less knowledge about bitcoins and crypto. They are just asking their doubts which look funny to an experienced person.

2) Some members may be joining just to ask some questions here, if you restrict it from this, they will move to other platforms like Quora.

3) There is already a  report to moderator option present on all options and you can use it if you find someone ding this repeatedly with wrong intentions.

Why let the mods do the job if it can be done without them? Mods can do other stuff if this is not on them. And besides, I'm suggesting to let them create threads in some particular boards/sections like Beginners & Help where they can still ask their questions and post their queries, but until they learn the basic things, they should not be allowed to post in other more important sections. They still can post in the threads though, so that they can reach to the rank where their restrictions will be lift. And if they can't rank up, they will be in that position forever, and they deserve it.

The threads can be reviewed before its published.

That can help in this case, but it will be another hassle to hire more mods to cover the threads being published as we all know we have a very huge population in here. So restricting is still a better solution to that.

if you look into altcoin mining section, I think restriction for accounts below Member won't be good idea.

Well, I think I have clearly stated that there should be exclusions from the sections where they cannot start new threads. So they would be allowed to post in a few sections/boards like Beginners & help and some other whichever admins think are good choices for this.

Maybe add a new benefit to Copper Member?
The Copper member is what can solve the gap here.

That can be an addition to this implementation for sure. Members with abilities can buy Copper Member and post freely in any section they want (Copper Member advantages would need to be updated for sure). And I'm pretty sure that every spammer wont buy it just to post nonsense as they can't join paid campaigns with these ranks and it would be useless to buy a rank to post without getting any benefits out of it.

maybe just allow one topic in some other sections outside beginners and help, off-topic, etc... just because there can be someone who knows his stuff.

And what if they start creating new accounts just to ask their useless questions in other sections? That is why I suggested to allow them to post in just some sections like Beginners & help where they can ask anything they want, but nothing outside that section. That way, they will be compelled to just read the things in other sections and will only be able to reply but won't be able to ask the exact same things posted just a few minutes back by creating a new thread.

1) Why do they need to ask about their doubts if they have already been answered before? All they need to do is to read, and that is what they don't do, and this restriction will make them do it, at least to some extent.

2) Well, they are always allowed to leave if they want. Having more people has never been a need of this forum. All we do here is get what we don't know and give away what we know. If you can't do both, then you are not welcome. And, I have said this too many times but saying it again, they should be allowed to post in some sections so that they can ask their questions.

3) We are tired of doing that. And if that could finish the spam we have in here, I don't think we would have a Merit system in the forum today.

OP, I made the same suggestion, and I believe it's good as a temporary solution while the mods are cleaning the whole forum from spambait topics and spam mega threads.

Mods, why not test it in the Bitcoin discussion subforum for one month and see the results?

Yeah. It should at least be applied for a short period of time just to see its effect, and I'm pretty sure it will be impressive. Any board its applied to will be free from the massive amount of spam and useless threads.
