If you want some of the best stats on where merit is being awarded and such, I tried to link them on my thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2979706.0

Newb To Newbs: Gaining Merit Fast!

I can tell you I learned a lot from starting that topic

#1 People who genuinely need help appreciate having one place to look for good information. Instead of wading through all the BS.

#2 For some reason merit sources and old accounts absolutely hate it if you create a thread that organizes and links to other important threads. They've already read it all, and you aren't doing anything that specifically benefits them.

#3 Don't make threads to benefit #1 because they don't have any merit!

Also, posting about why you don't get merits or the pros/cons of the merit system seems to get a disproportionately high amount of merit. Go figure.

Case in point, the post got merited. Thanks for the merit of course - looks like you agree! Smiley

Dear all,

I know, this is yet another thread about merit, but I’ve been really asking myself if I am doing anything wrong, which is why I had to write this post.

I’ve been quite active on this forum for some time and have struggled to rank up since the new merit system was introduced.

When merit was introduced, I read many threads in which people said that the system would be beneficial for those who would write quality threads and display a decent command of English. I would argue that my posts generally meet these criteria. Of course I sometimes also write short posts (like everyone else on here), but I have also created some quality and helpful content, which sometimes took me up to an hour to write and research. The result is zero to hardly any merit. I sometimes have the feeling that there is simply too much content on this forum in order to get noticed by people who would be able to give you merit or people who could give you merit simply can’t appreciate the content due to their own lack of language skills. While quality seems to remain unnoticed, there are tons of shitposts that receive merit for reasons that are beyond my imagination.

I was therefore wondering if I am doing anything wrong. Is there anything else I can do beyond putting time in my threads and trying to use correct language to get merit?

I would appreciate if you had any advice for me.

I just started with cryptos. I would say that I spend around an hour per day, mostly when I'm on public transportation, since I don't have a lot of free time.

Therein lies the rub.

Respect, you actually seem to have read one of my early posts. While it was true at the beginning that I only spend some time I now use most of my weekend. If you read my posts you will notice that it wouldn’t be possible to write most of them on a mobile device or in a short period of time.

Btw I find bold letters in red colour quite offensive, but thanks anyway for proofing that bashing newbies seems to be a reliable merit source.

Rumor has it that the larger the red bold, the more merits one earns. Just watch and see if you don't believe me.

Hey, Mr. Shit For Brains, you now see how it works? The larger and more colorful the font, the more merit one receives. Case in point, I received more sM for the post I quoted above than you have in total. Apologies for not apologizing for sticking it up your ass further but that's the type of guy I'm.

One more thing in cause you missed it, FUCKTARD. I just won the reward for BitcoinTalker of the Year --> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3232693.msg33729235#msg33729235

If you post because you want to earn merits then your mind set is wrong. What will happen is your post will be long and beats around the bush instead of going straight to the point. If you post, ask your self, why do you need to post? Because of merits? Or because you feel your post will add something to the topic of discussion. If your answer is the later, then you are in the right track.
Wow, I totally agree with you. The purpose we all are in this forum is to contribute to others as well as the BTT forum. If we can give the best yag then we can get merit. so the goal we make a post is not to get merit. Our goal is to be useful to others and make quality posts. And when we have made a quality post then we will be able to get merit points. It's not all will get merit, but try to continue to provide the best. When we can give the best then we will also be able to get the best too. Everything is just waiting time and everything will go according to what we have done. Do not despair, believe that we will get the best !! .

Post quality topics that are helpful to the bitcoin community. Just post and dont think about the merit system too much, and everything will follow. I know how hard it is to earn merit, but thats the only thing we can do. We cant beg someone to give us merit. Its up to them if they wanted to give one. Well, if not, then thats their decision. Level up your knowledge through reading, or by doing some research so you can contribute more on the forum. Besides, there are lot of users out there who used to post topics that are of high quality but were still not merited, yet they dont see this as being less fortunate, but they see this as a challege and motivation to improve more on what they are doing.

Do not mind the merit. Just keep on posting something that is meaningful and helpful. Be more active. Not only for two months. If you just mind the post that your are going to do every time that you post to a certain topic. It will be easier for you to get a merit. Also if you did a thread you must do something pthat is helpful or useful. Also something that the bitcoin users should know. It is really hard to earn merit.

The best way to get merit is build yourself a time machine and go back in time a couple of years that way you will get the merit commensurate with your rank when it is implemented. As far as earning it now goes I think you are just setting yourself up for a great deal of frustration as writing quality posts in no way guarantees you will receive merit.

Some one would say that high quality posts will get merit, but i think its just a joke, how many time will one user spend to make a high quality post? and how many people will give smerit to other posts? and how many merits do we need to get a rank rise? Who can tell me?

You should utilize the search function, because there are many threads that have already discussed this. It is unhealthy for people to get desperate for merit, because then you start forcing yourself to post the strangest things that are not helpful. You should stop worrying about merit and focus on becoming more informed, helpful, creative and useful. Merits should be of literally no concern to you.

You say that you've been quite active for a long time, but you barely have any posts and just registered 2-months ago. You have not been active for a long time and you barely post anything. If you think 2-months is being around for a long-time, then you are sorely mistaken about the expectations around here.

We’ll that’s the kind of answers you’d expect from someone who is in the comfortable position to sit on a nice stash of merit. From your perspective it is easy to say that someone shouldn’t worry about merit.
I also grant you that I haven’t been around here for a long time, but definitely not that I haven’t been active. That’s definitely not the kind of “advice” I had hoped for....

Two months is a joke man, you really know that yourself don't you? Even before the Merit system, you wouldn't even have been a Senior right now, don't you know how the old system worked?? I am here for 8 months and even that is still a joke. And really, that's not the real point. You also have to post interesting stuff, be helpful and write threads with insight.

If this is too much for you, please get out and start your own forum or so. That's exactly the purpose of the Merit system - get BS posters and spammers out - and I have seen enough bullshit posts in the last 8 months, to fully support this purpose. I propose you support it too, since it's also in your interest, guaranteeing a nice and interesting forum to you and me and everyone else.

Also, for a lot of these beggars, I really wonder what they will do when something really bad happens in their lives, if they can't even live with not having BTCtalk Merits - oh God!

I agree with you to a point.
Merit system made it harder for some of us to rank up. For those of us who are honest and don't bend the rules to do this because is see that those who farm are still doing their thing. There are many reports of people who receive merits for a one line post of maybe 3 words and they are not punished.
I think that the wise-guys are still doing their thing while we are taking the punishment.
All information you mention are all true because of merit we lower ranks had problems ranking up while those who had smerits won't give time to review post if my post or your post deserve a merit. Merit system did help bitcointalk forum a quality post that that help us all in cryptocurrency industry.

Hi both of you guys,

Your threads should be used as classic case studies of over-quoted, over-highlighted, over-bold threads, which make readers feel really annoying.
I hate those effects. Over-quoted threads hurt my fingers by continuously scrolling the mouse to read the whole pages (my thread is over-quoted too because I would like to show you how annoying it is); over-highlighted threads hurt my eyes; over-bold threads intrigued my eyes to focus on shitty-part of your threads.
To sum up, those shitty-posters should aware that they have to be responsible for my medical bills before using those effects.

it's hard to get merit points especially if you are new to this forum but post quality and post constractive posts have the chance to give you the merit so you must have a quality post to do before you can claim merit points.
