I totally don't understand how to use miners other than the noob friendly guiminer can anyone give me a hand or should I just stick with guiminer?

The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

i would just stick to guiminer......it gives good hashrates and if it works on your computer you don't need to change

look @the gui-miner in the Console tab.
A miner is just a programm called with some parameters.
the gui miner just do the call with the right parameters.
