@mgoz
If you have the skills, you can swap the boards from a good unit to help with the troubleshooting. Presuming of course that this is first approved by Canaan.

And then when you have figured out which board or other component is faulty, you can request Canaan sending you a new spare part.

Just caught it right after a crash. It was completely off and noticeably warmer than other units. Let it sit for 15 minutes and cycled PSU. This is what I'm seeing with chip temps and voltages a few minutes after cycling and starting to hash. Don't know if it means anything. Looks like a startup sequence:

Those values might be part of some startup sequence. It crashed again overnight. The 0 and -40 values seem to cycle through all of the chips on all boards for about the first 10 minutes of hashing. After it goes through all, values look normal. I haven't checked other machines to see if they do it as well. Not getting anywhere with Canaan support still. Have been sending them logs of when it's crashed and after it's rebooted, and they say it's fine. Machine powers off entirely, gets removed from cgminer, and there's nothing in logs when crashed.

I have been having the exact same issue and have had some success with taking off the back cover plate and using compressed air to clean dust off of the boards.

Thanks, another just dropped too. No word from Canaan yet, if anyone has seen this before please let me know. If I physically power cycle it will start mining again, sometimes for days before dropping out of CGMiner.

Just an update that support had me swap MM boards between working and crashing unit. Same unit still crashing. Last night I was monitoring temperatures and fan speed, saw nothing abnormal, and unit suddenly disappeared from cgminer. Checked it and it was entirely off. Going to try swapping fans tonight, but starting to think repeated overheating from fan reporting 0RPM/100% has already done more damage. Previously it would sit in idle status after crashing and now power is cut entirely.

Seems to be the case. Swapped fans last night and finally witnessed crash. Other unit that's had no issue just reported fan spinning at 0RPM/100%. Fan was stopped. Went into idle status with yellow LED and chips began to overheat to over 100C. Right before fan stopped, crashed unit was reporting fan at 5790RPM/100% with other unit reporting 5820/98%. Intake and exhaust temps were 24/69C.

Thanks for the guide, most helpful. I am trying to improve cost per t/h I can use the frequency command to slow things down but the kwh per th is worse than just running on standard settings. I cannot get the -avalon7-voltage-level 12 command to work the miner does not run at all. Any ideas?

And what miner are you using it on? It only works with an A721 or A741, the A8's have a different format. Did you use the double '--' or just a single '-'? the commands must start with --
I use: --api-listen --avalon7-voltage-level 12 in conjunction with a Voltage Offset of either -1 or -2.

One of my A741's is hashing 2THs slower than its brethren. Looking at the logs in its section I see:

Got it. Since Blokforge has 841's for $599 I picked up another to replace this 741 when I later take it offline for repair. Haggs, since the A7's are past EOL and out of production, when you were at Canaan did they say anything as to how long they will support the 721/741's with replacement hash boards?

Better marking would also help it.
So when you open it, you could clearly see which is board 0, 1, 2 and 3.

If I remember right, I think that Canaan should have spare parts available for at least two years after the miner release.

Quick question: I'll find out when I get the replacement 841 next week sometime and open up the 741 but you mention repasting the chips - but only the top side. What does the back of the boards look like? Bare filled thermal vias (bumps) w/paste directly against the large back side heat sinks or is there layer of TIM between board and heatsink?

When repasting the top side of chips and their smaller heat sink, any reason not to do the backside as well? Aside from needing to when doing board swaps of course.

Haha, same boat NotFuzzy.

One of my 741's has a board down. I haven't pulled it to play around and see if it's just the board or PMU yet. You should be able to test that by swapping the board positions on that one blade, to differentiate.

I still have the dead boards from the 841 video I shot I'll clean off the old paste to give a clear picture of what the back of the board looks like. From what I remember they appeared to be flat, but I can't be sure with the paste having already been applied.

I haven't checked with Canaan, but when they sent out the replacement boards for the 841, they sent them pre-pasted (back and chips). I think that is how they plan to send out replacement boards.

Cool. Sounds/looks like they are using TLam(R) which is an aluminum-backed circuit board material made just for high power apps like this. Once again, as with the heat sink design just goes to show that Canaan has some pretty sharp designers. Cheesy

I figured I'd reach out to Canaan in regards to sourcing parts for the 741. There advice is to email them - rma@canaan.io - This is to ensure you are requesting the right replacement part.

Sounds like they have a lot of 741's still kicking around. When I spoke with them they did suggest it may be beneficial to just purchase an entire unit. This made sense as you would essentially have a spare for anything that can fail. Not sure what the pricing is on any spare parts as all miners will be outside of the warranty period.
