Why?

Why what?

Why are those your favorites?

I like Goodfellas cause Martin Scorsese, Ray Liotta, DENIRO AND PESSCI ARE AMAZING. Plus I quote it everyday, all day, all the time. "TOMMY GO HOME AND GET YOUR Shinebox!"

Godfather part 1 and 2 because come on it is the Godfather, it is amazing the story and everything!

A Bronx Tale, because I grew up near those places so it makes me feel good and who hasn't had those friends.

Casino because it is amazing DENIRO PESCI!!!! plus it is super awesome when they blow up the car and he survives.

Die Hard, BRUCE WILLIS I MEAN COME ONNNNNNNNNNN!!!!! So much quotable. "Just a fly in the ointment, Hans. The monkey in the wrench. The pain in the ass." He is like a Troll but a hero troll LOL

VHS 1 and 2 Cause come on if you like gore and crazy stories that will scare you, these are great movies. I love how one story is about a couple and girl turns out to be a lesbian that murders her husband, and another great one is how beautiful the zombie story is. It isn't cheesy and it shows how it would actually start!

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein AMAZING! SO FUNNY AND how can you not be a fan! CLASSIC!

Dracula, this is the only Dracula I consider any good. Boris Karloff is amazing! I can watch that movie for hours!

Friday the 13th, a great classic of the 1980's horror golden age!

Sleep Away Camp it is a very messed up movie and I enjoy that.

Friday COME ONE CUBE and Chris Tucker!!!!! SMOKEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY "It is friday, you aint got shit to do."

Road Trip I mean Tom Green, DJ Quails, and that hot chick! I laugh thru that whole movie!

Scarface, I mean instant classic, just love it. Kinda like Silk Road, quick rise to power and doesn't realize how he made enemies in powerful people and taunts them.

That's better.

I truly despise it when these threads pop up and everyone puts up a list and then fails to discuss. It's like the most intellectually vacuous thing ever. Nobody gives a fuck about what anyone else says, because nobody actually engages.

Engage. Discuss. Criticize.

Now, how, albeit loosely, are two of your chosen films related to six of mine? Hint: it relates to the doings of a director.

SO? if i like avatar movie whats with that

Thank you for the reply. Here's my answer. I don't know of a single person who has seen films that I have mentioned, or like the films I have mentioned, that would still consider Avatar to be as great as they might have formerly believed it to be.

Forgive me if I sound a little condescending. Let's try a fresh start, where I'll explain a little. The first thing you must understand is I've seen Avatar. One and a half times to be precise. I saw Avatar before I saw any of the films I listed. I used to not be old school, and even if I do like older films now, that doesn't mean I don't like newer films now. I'd hardly qualify five of the films on my list as old, but rather quite modern. So, for starters, there's five modern films on that list.

Now, the second thing you should consider. As I mentioned, I've seen Avatar. You haven't seen the films I listed. That means that I have some perspective on the matter that you don't. Out of the fifteen films under discussion - my fourteen and your one - I've seen them all, and you've seen one.

Let's go further. Out of the fifteen films under discussion, at least four or five of them were recently voted in the top 100 films ever made by directors and critics worldwide. Avatar was not one of them. That does not mean that Avatar cannot be enjoyed. There's nothing wrong with deriving pleasure from a film. It certainly is better than not deriving pleasure from a film. I'm all for people enjoying films, rather than nitpicking about them.

And that leads to my last point. While I listed fourteen films, they are all made by five directors. Five were made by one, and four by another one. People who watch those films almost invariably love them. There is something rather magical about them. Since these directors are auteurs (not all directors are auteurs), the pleasure derived from these works go up as you build familiarity with the directors' style, themes and favorite actors.

And finally, as I alluded to when I discussed their ranking in the most prestigious poll out there, these are not obscure films. They are discussed endlessly by fans and film scholars alike. The consensus is that they provide undiminished pleasure upon repeated viewings. I can certainly attest to that.

but what about your favorites from the newer releases like back ~up to 5 years? I'd love to hear these too.

Three of the films mentioned are from the 21st century. Certainly there is little difference between a film made in 2004 and a film made in 2008? Two of the films are made in the '90s. I made a length reply to the thread starter. Give it a read.

Not only can you enjoy every film on this list, you can also have a whole new world opened up to you that will lead you to great places. Now consider the alternative. I could come in here and start talking about Die Hard. But everyone's heard of that, and almost certainly seen it. And even if they haven't seen it, they're already aware of it as a film that they could see if they wanted to. I'm trying to take you to new places. And my recommendations are not obscure 'B' movie picks. Rather they are films that are highly regarded. And I mean very very highly. Why do you suppose that is? One reason: they are beautiful, thoughtful, deep, pleasurable films to watch.

I can't pick a favorite movie, since there are a lot of great movies out there. I am a huge fan of Asian cinema like ' Oldboy', 'IP Man','Azumi' etc.

How many films have you watched from Yasujiro Ozu, Mikio Naruse, Kenji Mizoguchi, Edward Yang, Wong Kar-Wai, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Masahiro Shinoda, Shohei Imamura, Nagisa Oshima, Yoshishige Yoshida, Tran Anh Hung, Lav Diaz, Yasuzo Masumura, Shiro Toyoda, Kaneto Shindo, Koreyoshi Kurahara, Masaki Kobayashi, Hiroshi Shimizu, Takashi Miike, Stanley Kwan, Chen Kaige, Keisuki Kinoshita, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Jia Zhanke, Hirokazu Koreeda, Lee Chang-dong, and Hiroshi Inagaki?

What huge Japanese Golden Era director did I leave off from the list of directors listed above?

Between the three actresses Setsuko Hara, Hideko Takamine, and Kinuyo Tanaka, which do you like the best?

What is your opinion of the Taiwan New Wave vs. the Japanese New Wave?

Which Wong Kar-Wai film do you think is the best? Do you think there is another director who better explores the themes of unrequited love?

Between Naruse and Ozu, which director do you believe better explores the theme of women and Japanese modernity?

Compare and contrast the plights of women depicted in Imamura's films over those in Mizoguchi's films.
