I'm happy to see you're exploring higher cinema. Wink

Now, just a little about Yasujiro Ozu. There's tons to say, but I'll just present a little. As I've said, my choices are not obscure. They're highly praised and treasured films. Here's some info about Ozu from the late great critic Roger Ebert. If you feel you're getting into spoiler territory, then just back off.

A clip to Floating Weeds where Roger Ebert provides commentary: http://arthousecowboy.com/journal/2013/5/1/four-minutes-of-ebert-on-ozu.html

Roger Ebert maintained a list of great films, reserved for only the best of the best:
- http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-an-autumn-afternoon-1962
- http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-tokyo-story-1953

Roger Ebert said: “Sooner or later, everyone who loves movies comes to Ozu.”: http://popcornworld.net/2013/04/09/everyone-comes-to-ozu/

Roger Ebert on Ozu: http://www.rogerebert.com/interviews/saluting-a-master-of-the-cinema-yasujiro-ozu

Iron Man. Just like how the billianare playboy acts ^^

Iron Man 3 Smiley....
That movie was not impressive at all, though the concept of Iron Man is cool enough.

Today's CGI is amazing. I remember watching the first Superman movie when I was young. It looked pretty real to me (when Superman was flying around). Today's CGI makes it nearly impossible to make the difference between real and fake.

And that's why Ozu's Tokyo Story is not my favorite movie. It was recently voted the greatest film ever in the prestigious Sight & Sound Poll, but there are six other Ozu films that I prefer more, and those six Ozu films are indeed some of my favorite films of all time.

I used to only watch Hollywood films, mostly. It's easy. You have to go out of your way to see others. What I mean by that is several things. One, you need to spend some effort to actually learn about the existence of the films. Two, you need to find access to them. And three, you have to mentally adjust your attitude to watch films which can be more philosophical, more cultural, sometimes older, have subtitles, and often slower.

Let's rephrase that. Today's CGI can be amazing, but often isn't so. The best CGI you see in the movies is of the mundane stuff that you never even knew was CGI. The Amtrak train in Let Me In was CGI, yet you'd never suspect it was.

I stopped buying dvds/blurays since I own a 600+ collection. I now use a plug-in mediaplayer for downloading movies. I still buy the ones which are really good, but not before downloading it first.

I will grant that you might have the need to seek "other" means to watch a film, if it were, say, unavailable, without English subtitles, or unavailable completely. An example might be Yoshishige Yoshida's films, such as A Story Written With Water. Keep in mind also, that you only get one chance to see a film the first time. In such cases, you don't want the experience ruined by an inferior transfer.

Furthermore, and especially for older films, it's to your benefit to pay for a disc. Older films only get restored and published if the publisher, such as Criterion, can do it profitably. If and when the majority believes it's acceptable to download for free, then that's the day that newly available films from the past will dry up to a trickle.

On a different note, what is your viewing setup? What equipment? How much importance do you attach to image fidelity? What would be your ideal setup?
