It is a nice suggestion but don't you think they will be punished soon enough for their actions? Default trust members are going around giving red trust to merit abusers and I think it is enough punishment for now. Nevertheless,. I think merit abusers deserve a permaban if ever they are caught abusing the merit system.  That way we also won't need merit moderators.
This isn't going to happen. Staff are already swamped and I think it should be left up to the community to police just like scams are. Merit abuse is probably just going to cause more hassle than it's worth and sadly farmers and "friends" are just trading it or swapping it between themselves and it's regular users who are left feeling the pinch whilst those with a lot of accounts and/or "friends" will just continue to bend the rules to their advantage.
I would gladly tag merit abusers, but as I've said before it appears Theymos doesn't want that, and I have to respect his stance.  Also, these cases of abuse are much less clear to me than account sales or even campaign cheating.  There definitely can be users who really like what one particular person has to say, and I might tag such a person unnecessarily.  I don't feel like dealing with the backlash of that, nor do I really want to neg someone and be totally wrong.

This all will take care of itself eventually; I have some faith that this'll be true.  We're only in month 2 of the merit system, so it's still young.  It wasn't designed to stamp out shitposters immediately--it's a gradual, long-term thing I think.  We'll see in a year or two.
This won't happen, as it could result in moderator abuse, just like (likely) scams aren't moderated.

Default trust members should not tag normal members for merit related cases, people were posting garbage and DT members tagged them, theymos made merit system and said that he had to speed up the process because he didn't want DT members tagging garbage posters. misusing merits is the same as posting garbage. majority of members will abuse this system because they don't really know what is happening, they only see that their accounts need merits to rank up and since they don't have anything to contribute, they would keep doing what they were doing.

After running out of merit supply, they have nothing else, even if somebody provides merits for them, it would be expensive, we have to find merit sellers after a few more months when only sources have sMerits to distribute. please don't tag people now. what if theymos disables merit requirement to rank up for a month or what would have happened if he'd introduced it one month late?

Let people do what they want with their sMerits, or tag them but don't act surprised if theymos removed you as DT1-2.

I think so. But in this case this forum is now over populated. Can they do all this? I believe in their cause they have been pointed by theymos to become DT's.

Merit system was implemented so as to improve the quality of forum without involvement of moderators.
If you find a person abusing the system then you may report them here.

But theymos has clearly stated that :
While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

We as a community must tackle with this.

This won't happen, as it could result in moderator abuse, just like (likely) scams aren't moderated.

I agree with your opinion.
punishment (red trust) is sufficient for such a case.

Obviously the merit system is a good introduction but members are constantly looking for ways to circumvent it. I was thinking there is a moderator.

Merit abusers should be tagged, I support the idea to fight against massive abusements from account farmers (in some cases after merit system launched have been changed to merit farmers).
I would gladly tag merit abusers, but as I've said before it appears Theymos doesn't want that, and I have to respect his stance.

However, in some specific cases and in somewhat extents, making final judgements on whether two or more accounts exchanging merits together over several rounds should be taken as objective as possible, and in some cases, it's really hard to find if abusers make their deals smart and clever.

In my opinion, shit-posters will be eliminated somehow, might be due to side-effects of merit system. With current rules of the forum on campaigns, lower ranked users (below Member rank) still have opportunities to join, hence they will definitely keep spamming the forum. However, some of them will have strong desire to rank up. Consequently, they have to be more constructive, try to be more constructive, over time they will automatically changed to be real constructive users. That's one of the most magic impacts of merit system on the forum users.
This all will take care of itself eventually; I have some faith that this'll be true.  We're only in month 2 of the merit system, so it's still young.  It wasn't designed to stamp out shitposters immediately--it's a gradual, long-term thing I think.  We'll see in a year or two.
Lastly, I hope that Theymos will put stricter rules on pre-requisites to join campaigns in the forum. When new stricter rules implemented, I believe that spammers will be wipen out on massive scale and faster than simply base on merit system.

You have a good working brain, you came to this kind of idea, but it will not be that easy. Yeah, it won't happen for sure. I agreed to Sir. LoyceV's statement.
This won't happen, as it could result in moderator abuse, just like (likely) scams aren't moderated.

DT Members are doing their job to punish those Merit abusers. I think it's enough to maintain our Forum tidy from these f*cking Merit Abusers. But, I think tagging them with Negative Trust isn't enough to teach them a lesson. They should be permanently ban or else they will keep abusing Merits. But before doing such a thing, we should prove that the certain user (Merit abuser) is really guilty for abusing Merits.
Because as we can see, there are too many reports about Merit abuse this past days, and I'm sure that not all of those reported users are really abusing their Merits. Do you guys know why? Because some users are just suspicious which is not enough reason to receive a punishment, by just simply giving more than "20" Merits to a certain post is now considered as a Merit abuse by other user which is WRONG. A solid proof is necessary before any accusations.

Users can use their smerit any way they like, they won't be banned for it.

This is what theymos says about merit trading:
Merit sales, transfers to aliases, back-and-forth trading, etc. are not much of an issue. All illegitimate merit will decay, and will account for a tiny and very expensive fraction of the total merit economy. It's basically a rounding error; fight it where convenient, but waste no sleep over it.

misusing merits is the same as posting garbage.

I don't agree with that. Many see posters with poor English skills as posting garbage, but that poster may have good moral standards. Awarding merits to friends or alts, or selling merit, shows a low moral code, and I think that it is right to red trust them. If they will cheat the merit system, there is a good chance that they will cheat trade partners in my opinion. Having poor English skills doen't mean that you will cheat in your trades.

Agree! There are two essential components of one thread: ideas and language. Ideas are important because they will the part which show readers that posters can solve the current problems or not; language is something like to tool to express ideas from posters and threads written in good English language (for instance) will make them easier to understand, and also preventing unexpected misunderstandings.

oh boy, this will become a surveilance system but i doubt this community will find enough capital to fund idiots doing this neverending surveilence work.

on the one side bitcoin trading is on the run from its bans of central banks on the other side, bitcointalk hunts trading of merits.
