Something to add to all of my 270X observations: Only the Sapphire Dual-X 270X provided heatsink coverage for all of its memory chips. This is likely important for long term usage with the OEM cooler.

Neither the Powercolor base model, the VisionTeks nor the Asus TOP providing cooling for all the memory chips. In fact, most just receive the air being blown off of the GPU cooling fins.

I plan to put Prolimatechs on the 270x units, except the ASUS model, though I will put heatsinks on its memory chips.

Test System: (same as always)

* ASRock 970 EX4, Sempron 145, 2GB HyperX
* Thermaltake TPG-1050M
* BAMT 1.2
* Cgminer 3.7.2
* USB Risers

I think I'm getting the exact same rig, motherboard, cpu, even the ram is Kingston (that shouldn't matter.) What USB Risers did you get? Some dude over in the litecoin forum uses non-powered risers for his 6 GPU rigs. The GPUs are all 7950s.

Mark hasn't said anything about his risers, and the Taiwan guy has new batches of them at a good price.

And, I'm getting the Sapphires.

Anything I should do to make them run at 490+ kh/s when I get them? heheh.

*edit1* My PSU will be the Seasonic X-1050 1050W 80Plus Gold. Does the RAM matter? It seems I can get away with the cheapest Kingston DDR3 1333 RAM.

Okay, I found a 270 (no X) for 15 USD less.

Quote
Sapphire R9-270 Dual-X OC 2GB DDR5 Boost approx 195 USD
Sapphire R9-270X 2GB DDR5 DualX OC Boost Full approx 210 USD
ASUS R9 270X DC2 TOP 2G 256bit approx 295 USD

I'm rounding the approx USD equivalent to nearest 5.

Grabbed them from a retailer on ebay. Am investigating being a distributor stateside. If you want a link to them PM me, the prices were about $20ish.

To reach the 490 zone, I'd say just try the settings which have worked for me: 24000TC, Power/Intensity 20, 1145 Engine, 1500 memory. For safe/long-term usage I'd set the engine to 0 (stock GPU clock). Puts you in the 450-470 range usually.

Ok. Should I save 75 bucks and grab 5 270-non-x Sapphires? I'm not getting the Asus ones, wrong price for me.

I don't have any personal experience with them but others have said good things. I have 5 on the way this week to test.

Having issues with my rig with the ASUS units in them, though I believe it's the rig and not the GPUs. It was having issues before I put them in there. Keeps locking up.

Update, appears to be heat related. Forgot the Thermaltake PSU sits right under one of the GPUs so it's getting hot air from the PSU. System is detecting overheating and shutting down. Put a cardboard tube over part of the PSU to direct the heat elsewhere as a quick fix, and lowered the GPU's settings to calm it down some. Half the power but hopefully won't cause issues overnight.

Dabs,

You are being overly-optimist in thinking that you can match Vesper's 492Kh/s... Vesper is a genius at this stuff... I would calculate my numbers on 450Kh/s which is what John is reporting with his cards... then hope to better...

Just my 2TAG...

You guys are too kind lol =P

I always base my purchasing/planning on safe numbers, usually average of what most folks are getting. This way I know the system "will likely make X hash" regardless of anything. Then I push the system to the bleeding edge and let it scream lol.

It's like I do with anything else in my life, bikes, cars, etc. I took my Monaro and pushed it to the edge lol. I'll do the same with my Commodore eventually.

The Aussies will recognize those cars.

Vesper. I'm an Aussie but strictly a Ford man.  Grin  But I know the cars you're talking about.  The Monaro got a new American style nose and the steering wheel moved about 4 foot to the left and became a Pontiac.  Same with the Commodore except that became a Chev.

Yeah the 'new' GTO was truly my love car. Got one brand new right off the boat with 0.25miles on the dash, drove it for a year, then took it apart down to the frame and started customizing it. I worked with several car part companies in Australia to get aftermarket parts developed, and tested out a lot of stuff nobody here stateside had ever seen before. Helped get the Harrop supercharger designed for the car and everything.

I had planned to keep the car for life, even bought spare interior parts, carpet, etc. Never had a chance to finish out my goal though, while driving to work one day a lorry hopped 3 lanes over and ran over the car, throwing me across the highway like a pinball =(

I drive the Commodore now, the Pontiac G8 GT. I got it before they canned it and turned it into a Chevy import (eww..)

Update on the cards: Sure enough it appears my reboot issue on the 5x rig was simply overheating of the cards due to the PSU. It's been stable ever since redirecting the hot PSU air.

I looked over the raw data, and the mining hardware comparison on these two pages:

https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison/raw_data
https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison

Although it does not specifically list the non-X 270 Sapphire for most entries (there is one or two I saw at 400 kh/s) I'm inclined to think it will still do a lot better than 450 kh/s.

If it does better than 455 kh/s, then it's very close to the price/performance ratio for the 270X running at 490 kh/s. Issue would be if watts/hash or hash/watts is better.

I also downloaded the latest BAMT 1.3 with sgminer 4. litecoinbamt_r9_1.3.zip and of course the imager to put it on a USB stick.

So far, I have the following:

1. software
2. veggie crate
3. 30 AMP breaker (for 220 volts) = good for about 6 rigs at 950 watts each

All I need now are the rigs and a weekend to set them up.

hehe.

MSI 270 (non-X) OC edition just arrived. Working on some other stuff, but will power one up later and see how it goes. Waiting for PSU to arrive.

Thanks for the Asus 270x updates Vesper. For those having trouble running TC 24000 in Windows try using --lookup-gap 0.

Been busy all day, I'll have to do the tuning tomorrow. Got some 270's running right now on stock clocks, which is providing 414kh. I had them at 492 though, so fear not, just haven't documented anything.

I will leave off with this: The Prolimatech on a 270X is fabulous. The card may as well be in a fridge. It's 20* below the OEM-cooler cards.

Can't wait to see it on a 270, I bet it'll be 38*C temp overclocked lol..

I'm sold on that cooler, but where do I get it? Amazon out of stock, and it seems no store local to me sells it.

LOL.

We had a bit of a freeze the past couple days and I found the limit of the miners to heat the house. If the air coming into the house to cool the miners is below 20*F the house won't get above the mid 70's. When it was in the teens/single digits, I had to turn off the air intake fans and increase the exhaust/circulation fans. If I didn't, there was too much cool air and the house was getting into the low 70's, which is cold haha. This let the 2nd floor miners stay cool by having super-cold air drift in to them naturally, and pushed hot air through the house. First floor remained stable with the systems down there.

I'm sold on that cooler, but where do I get it? Amazon out of stock, and it seems no store local to me sells it.

I need 4 more myself, I hope more come in. I'm sure once the CNY passes we will see shipments. Yesterday, frozencpu.com had 5 of the black ones, and before I could place an order someone bought 4 of them, so there was 1 left lastnight.

If I see any pop up somewhere I'll let you guys know. Looks like someone has purchased Amazon's entire supply of the Prolimatech 140mm fans as well, I got the last 5. I need like a bunch more.

I sometimes wonder if the lurkers on this thread buy stuff based on what I review. I sometimes notice I will review something positively, and the next day  most of Amazon's stock is gone. lol

Is it Saturday yet?

I'd really like to bring the TAG pool down for MPOS updates soon.  I'm wondering if I should just wait until February 1st when everything will be like Y2K.  The only issue I would have is the updates would break the CSS changes I had to make so most of the stuff on the site doesn't break when you resize the window.  I really need a web design code monkey.  That way I can be like:
