My little Mac OS X application takes the current MtGox exchange rate and displays it like the system time.
http://bitcowatch.1btchost.com/index2.png

The application helps to do normal stuff on a Mac, without interruption, without moving to Mtgox or keeping Windows open. The exchange rate is permanently under your "control". If not .. you can quickly use the bookmarks to jump to MtGox.

more infos:

free beta:
freebeta@bitcowatch.1btchost.com something like "Give Me One!" would be enough text.

Looks very cool, thanks for the link.

Do you know if it listens to the websocket feed or polls the API?

The application polls an Mtgox ticker every 90 seconds. The address is like:
http://mtgox.com/api/0/data/ticker.php
(I will check out what the differences between this new address and the old one are)

If the response is not reveived within 90 Seconds, then I print "--.--" as result.

Since this is potentially a trojan that steals your wallet, I Googled some Objective-C docs and wrote an open source clone in 45 minutes.

You can download it directly from GitHub here: https://github.com/downloads/coolstorybro/MtGox-Status-Item/mtgox%20status%20item.app.zip

You can grab the code here: https://github.com/coolstorybro/MtGox-Status-Item

Runs on Snow Leopard and Lion, 32 and 64 bit. It's WTFPL-licensed, so do whatever you want with it.

That's mean. You're stealing the idea without any proof that his software is harmful. I know that there are scammers, but there is an open source paranoia in this forum. Open Source is not always good, as you have just demonstrated.

I seriously doubt that this is a trojan. He could have stolen wallets without creating the original logo + avatar. They both look quite nice by the way.

I should have said potentially, not probably. My apologies. I've edited the original post.

There's no point in keeping something so simple closed source. There's absolutely no reason for it to be closed source unless you're doing something funny.

Also, ideas are worthless; execution is everything. I didn't steal his idea, I merely provided an open alternative that has zero change of being malicious. Anyone is free to take the code I wrote and do whatever they want with it. I claim no ownership over it and the WTFPL allows free modification/distribution.

I am now at work .. My income is legal and overtaxed (germany).

Alternativ Solutions are Welcome ... But please stop accusing me of building a trojan.

My intension is to ask for a small donation if i had added functionality that justifies it.

I wont beg or steal. .. Back at work ... See you later

@alowm: apologies accepted
@nmat: thanx :-)

Security is a vital issue, I am thinking of giving the code into a review.
The whole thing is a Bitcoin experiment:
I bought a bit webspace here: http://1btchost.com/
a Logo here: http://www.ecogex.com/logos/
and I only used Bitcoins for that "investments" ..

Every time I made a "deal" I needed Bitcoins and trust. By now it works.

Interesting Question:
- How do you generate trust in Ad Hoc Deals in general?

My Code can be reviewed by a moderator, if it could stay closed source afterwards.

btw: has anybody tried to make github accept bitcoins? ;-)

I kind of agree...  don't need to come in and piss all over the guys Cornflakes(tm) ... while he's having breakfast.

Maybe you are a more experienced coder than he is and can produce something in 45 mins that might have taken him days or weeks of self study figure out.

IMHO under such regards, both projects can be seen as equally admirable.
