radeon 6870 card runs hot?

In another thread I mentioned my crossfire build was running really hot (within seconds one of the cards would jump to 90C). I took out one of the cards, and the original one that is still there still gets hot very quickly When runnign bitcoin it will go up to 80C within a couple minutes. The odd thing is that the auto fan doesn't seem to care... it only goes up to ~34%, and allows the card to idle at 85C. If I manually force the fan to go to 50% then I can force the card back to 77C. Should  the auto fan be more aggressive in keeping the temp down?

Well obviously it doesn't. What's the point of your question? You know what you have to do - manually control the fan.

i had the same problem with my 2x Gigabyte 6950OC,one of them goes 85C and fans keep on 60%... i speaked with gigabyte support why is that card soo hot and asked them for normal working temperatures and maximum allowed which will not blow my card , they didnt actually answared me as i wanted but they say that it's normal, actually they said that this cards goes to100C on stress tests ,
to me after 85c is not going well

i currently manually set fans to 100% and hotter card keep around 72C if in my room temp is 30C card goes max 82 mostly keep around 78C

I'm running mine with a 5830 using Trixx to control them.

There is a custom fan setting (instead of auto) which I think most of the other overclocking tools have and you can set your fan to whatever you want. You could set it straight to 100% but that can be noisy.

When mine hits >85 degrees it chokes. Often with the auto setting the GPU heats up faster than the software seems to expect so it will overheat and choke before the fan can catch up. I get it reasonably cool using what the custom setting recommends and then upping it a little bit. The default setting puts the fan speed at 1%/degree so 75 degrees = 75% fan speed. If you change it to starting out high, like around 40% then hitting 100% at around 90 degrees then it seems to manage fairly well. I have it going from 74-80 depending on the outside temp.

My 6870 still runs much hotter than my 5830 and doesn't go that much quicker, but it's still a decent 2 card setup.

I'm also working on a solution to get rid of the heat that pours out of the fan port from the two cards and additional cooling for the 6870. I am pretty sure my case setup still has some tweaking to go.

MSI Afterburner lets you do a user defined curve for the "auto" setting. I use that with my 6870 and it bounces between 40-45% at 73-75 degrees.

not very relevant, but I had a 4890 that was going quickly at 100-110 °C when mining on default, I managed to reduce to 95 by lowering Memory voltage and clock.

When I changed it, I discovered a massive amount of dust that was blocking the airflow so the card was not cooled properly.
I manage to get it 20% cooler on default by cleaning it

On full load my 6870 doesn't go past 66C with the fan set to auto (non-user defined), if you have filters on your case fans they could be clogged up (that's happened to me in the past) and you may also want to research the airflow of your case to see if it's effective or not.
