For newcomers like me, it's hard to get merit. Everyone in my Local Boards uses the merit to sell money, so, as you can imagine. Merit has become commercial in nature and has no money no Merit.
So you can experience the despair of a newcomer to the next level.

I have some suggestions.

Maybe you can refer to some of the bounty threads. Each week's post has the word count and quantity requirements.. You can get a certain number of Merit if you meet the conditions. Weekly statistics and issuance.
Or any other way you can think of, but not totally dependent on anyone to get the Merit.

I think it will be fair, let merit not be out of reach. Everyone can get it through their own efforts,as long as you meet the requirements, conditions, rather than need 80% of luck and buy.

The above is my suggestion. Thank you very much for reading.
Best regards.

Merit is about quality, not quantity. Please read https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.

Yeah, I know. my focus is that the Merit have become commercial in nature, at least in my Local Boards. This has nothing to do with quality, you need money.

If you can prove that a specific user is buying or selling merit, why not expose them in Meta? That would probably be considered meritorious.

You can create a thread about Merit sales, where Chinese merit traders can be reported. They risk red trust by doing so. If they don't get reported, they stay under the radar, as most people here can't read Chinese.

Buying merit will be a temporary thing, eventually all farmed accounts will run out of sMerit to sell, and won't receive new merit unless they create quality posts. Some users could still rank up with bought merit, but the majority won't be able to do that. And as bitperson already pointed out: that's how it is intended.

I checked some of your posts, but if you post on page 34 , page 27 or page 22 of a spam megathread, you shouldn't expect to be merited.

Note that posting generic useless posts in shorter threads doesn't get you merit either. Since the merit system was introduced, I see more bad posts on the technical boards. They get reported and deleted.
I don't think ranking up should be your goal. I know it's easy to say sine I'm Legendary already, but reducing spam is more important now than giving everybody a higher rank.

Merits.... I do not know why money changes everything  now in this forum. They said merits only for quality post. Now again, merits can buy. What is what. Merits  supposedly can not be transferrable so people Will gonna do their best to make a quality post, like me t working for it to get merit but until nothing change. Still the same

If you're able to participate on Bitcointalk in a constructive way, you will receive merit as a side effect, without trying. However, if you're new to bitcoin and you additionally struggle with English (or whichever langauge is appropriate for the boards you frequent), trying is unlikely to help much. It would probably be a better idea to just read and learn instead of obsessing over merits. You can participate on most boards here even with zero merit.

Be legitimate on getting merit, don't risk on the red tag it might be you have if you abuse merit. Buying smerit is one of the prohibited on this forum then we must obey it. Avoid more post or replies about more than 20 pages on megathread or else you have become spamming the forum. Just find a genuine thread that you can be shared an idea, after that, you have never known that you are merited by those merit source in the forum.

I agreed on LoyceV just avoid the thread that more than these pages replies, it should be deleted and even single merit you don't have.

No matter how good your post is, getting it merited is still based on chance. Also, if you have a friend here or someone selling merit, it doesn't take a high quality post to get one.. get it?

Isn't it time we stamped on these sales of merit points. We've had enough time to see how the system is developing, and it seems to have developed a market that needs to be stopped in my opinion. We even have reports of merit sources selling their merit quotas.

If someone is selling merit and weakening the forum, then their ability to award merits should be removed from them. If they can't behave responsibly, then remove the source of temptation.

Stop this kind of post if the system works perfectly.

that just it.. the key word is "IF". Judging by the way you posted, you have no idea what's going on...

Absolutely. Merit points should be viewed as a nice gesture, an extra that might come your way now and then. Posting with the sole objective of gaining merit, and then throwing a hissy fit because no one gave any, is futile. This is a discussion forum, and those who aren't here to learn about bitcoin will probably find happiness elsewhere rather than here.

If the forum can add a article date sort, it will be more convenient for me to find some recent posts.
Thank you for you guys reply, let me gain some additional knowledge.

I think it is much better think x100 before creating new thread. Look all over meta complaint about merit widely spread. Maybe I would say that merit is not for selfish gain alone but it should be for all gain. The give and take of merit in a decent way is the most important to accept, however, without any proofs we couldn't stop those people who do an arrangement in the dark to counterfeit merit with payment. I believe that still there is justice over this forum.

Getting merits appear difficult now in comparison the situation we had when merit system was launched. This might be because members had used most of their default merit points and we are dependent on merit sources only for merits. The number of new members is increasing at fast pace here and merit sources are not adjusted accordingly.

Getting merits appear difficult now in comparison the situation we had when merit system was launched. This might be because members had used most of their default merit points and we are dependent on merit sources only for merits. The number of new members is increasing at fast pace here and merit sources are not adjusted accordingly.

The first two weeks after launching the merit systems where a bit of a party. People received a new thing and were eager to put it into motion without too much filter. And why not? after all, it was time to play with the new toy and see how it felt to use this feature. Bags were full (airdropped sMerit bags) so it was time to experiment getting the kicks from either end of the two sided transaction, adjusted to each one’s own criteria which is bound to be different from one guy to the next fellow down the lane.

The first week passed with nearly 28k sMerit sent around the user base. The second week went by waiting to see the results on the forum and their compliance to declared overall objectives of the merit system. This second week though, afer first week’s hangover, took it’s toll and sMerit sent went down to nearly 21K.

And so the weeks went by and, as we often see in crypto, a progressive overall decline in sMerit sending took place, being these past weeks stabilized around the 7-8K weekly area. No doubt, users started to give it more value once the initial new toy hype was over, and a more restricted use was inherently set in place in our minds when sMerit bag quantity declined and did not refill at the same rate (merit sources aside).

Not only did the amount sent over the user base decline up to the more or less stable current weekly volumes, but so did the average awarded to a user, going from an all time initial average of nearly 7 sMerit per awarded user, to the current average of around 4 (average on those awarded).

To refute your hypothesis where by users have used up most of their awardable sMerit, data shows that on overall average, only 10%-11% (of users in a sMerit Tx) of accumulated sMerit has infact been awarded so far. So it’s not down to it being dried out, but rather a conscious use being developed around it and a shift in the criteria for awarding sMerit from the happy first few weeks, moving to a rather more selective and probably evolving criteria.

I myself am on the above average, having awarded only 12% so far, though I try not to hang on to it. Regardless, I am aware that, though sMerit does neither expire not decay (yet) over time, a broader view may be required when awarding sMerit. That is on my to do list.

I think it will take a lot of time before that happens. Note that we have a lot of unused accounts that are being taken over by hackers. Those are mostly people who had accounts here before the database leak. Now these accounts can be used to spam merit till the end of days. I'm pretty sure it's already being done.

The amount of sMerit received at the start of the merit system, depends on rank and how active the account was in the previous year. I can't find back the link, but I think around 600,000 sMerits were available to give away on January 25th. On a total of 887,673 active accounts, that's only enough to rank up a small fraction of users.
