Enclosed Miner

Hi all,

First of all let me put the disclaimer out there that I'm not a miner, I'm a trader, so please ignore my ignorance. Now that's out there, I've been thinking for some time on setting up a small GPU rig, perhaps five x 1070 cards or so, but the best location in my house to store it would be in my garage, however it's also a workshop, so it can get dusty.
So, I was thinking of an enclosed mining rig in a tall metal locker? The cards would be spaced up the locker, and I could modify it to have more ventilation and intakes/exhausts. Thoughts?

As I said I'm not a miner so this is new to me, but I just know that an enclosed rig would be much, much more suitable for me.

Thanks so much for your response. Have you had any experience with enclosed rigs? I was thinking of using an old locker because I have a couple spare and thought it might be useable; perhaps I can take ideas from the enclosed server ones you linked to.

a single rig with 5 GPU set up doesn't require that large amount of space, If I were you, find a suitable place in a room with a fresh air ventilation probably near window. dust is one of the best enemy of electronic parts most especially the fans when accumulated unto it and could block airways. Otherwise a regular cleaning is required.

Thanks for the response.

One of the reasons I suggested the locker is because I have to keep it in my garage; I don't have anywhere in my house, especially with a window open, in which I can put the rig; that and I have a couple of spare lockers. Could always section the locker in half with 5 GPUs, then can always expand in to the other section if I wanted to put more GPUs in?

If it is too dusty in your garage, even a closed rig is not safe from accumulating dust.
Better find a place in your room.

I have tried open or closed casings and found out that the dust still making its way inside, even with proper fan positions.
-Today, my exhaust fan is stronger than the intake, still dusty after a month.
-Tried just exhaust fans, no intake, the components heat up a lot than usual.
-No exhaust, not an option.

You can try Liquid Cooling if your dare.

With 5 GPUs it's quite easy for ventilation even in an enclosed miner.
You just attach some 12mm fans for that.

What cards are you running? Is that a server case or a GPU mining rig box?
how does it manage the temps inside?

In response to nc50lc, the only place I can have it is in my garage, so no, I can't put it inside anywhere mate.

Another thing to watch for in a garage setup is it's not conditioned space so it's going to be close to what the temperature is outside or a little cooler or hotter. Depending on where you are this could be an issue.

That is true. It does get warm in the summer....I might put a thermometer in there this weekend as it's supposed to be over 30 degrees Celsius outside; that'll be a good indicator. In winter it's cold AF.

Texas summer and rigs in the garage did fine. Directed airflow with blower cards work well for me. Shibob's setup looks much cleaner than mine but same Rosewill 4u modified case route

Thanks all for the responses.

By the looks of it I'd be better off sucking it up and buying a case like you've shown, rather than building one. That way the airflow would (I assume) be more controlled and hopefully less issues. Can they be stored vertically? Just thinking about where I'd store it.

The first seems to be more custom, whereas the second one seems to be more of a server.
Do you also know if the first one can be completely enclosed?

I must say, very nice mining cube. It's probably more for hobby miners because any additional expenses on cases like these are usually unnecessary.

Would you mind posting the cost of a cube here? Would appreciate it too if you could post more pictures.

Hi, Here are some more pics for my https://www.cryptominingcube.com/. These 3 show how I fit 19 slots in a 3 foot by 3 foot cube, the back view of the 3 power supplies with the ducted A/C fans and a side view showing how the power supplies are nestled under the slots for shorter cable lengths and to avoid any power extensions.  These pics are from a prototype with the ribbon cable risers. I have switched to the usb cable boards for production.  My slots have about an extra 1/2 in. spacing between boards for air flow. neal@nealnelson.com

Thank you for the pictures. Just one comment tho on cable management, it could be a bit neater. Otherwise good job, it seems sturdy and durable. What material did you use for the glass? Also, do you need to screw/unscrew to open the case?

Lastly, what temps do you get on that?

Thanks again for your kind words.  The panels are acrylic plastic because all the structural support is provided by the base and the aluminum frame.  The side panels are fixed.  The front, top and upper back panels are all attached with Velcro strips and allow easy panel removal and access to the system components.

Some of these pictures are of a prototype that used ribbon cables for the PCIe risers.  My production design uses the usb cable riser cards.  This change improves the cable management issues.

The huge air filter allows very high air flow from the ducted A/C fans.  I will visit a customer site and report back the temperature rise over ambient for a rig with 10 AMD r9 290 gpus.

This is an initial launch but I intend to offer competitive pricing in relation to other enclosed rigs with 19 PCIe slots.
