I have two questions.
1. How many cards could I use on my MSI 770-g45 mobo? I have two pciex16 slots and like three 1x slots. I have a 1x to 16x powered riser arriving today because I already have two cards in the x16 slots. I searched and found nothing about this mobo.

2. POWER. I have two 550w supplies and would need them both to power the same rig to use more than two 6950s. Could I do this-

http://www.overclock.net/t/15751/info-can-i-use-two-power-supplies-with-one-computer

and just turn the spare psu on first, then the rig with the main one?

Thanks

I personally like a cable like http://www.amazon.com/Vantacor-Dual-Adapter-Cable-2-way/dp/B00DL3L2J6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1373900453&sr=8-3&keywords=dual+psu+cable

One thing make sure not to mix the power supplies.  Ex both going into one card.  Have one or other going into the GPU.

yea since I already have a working rig I would put any additional cards (#3 and 4) onto the alt psu. do you think it is worth the money to buy something like that or is there not much of a chance at breaking my alt psu with the DIY method I originally linked to?

I tried the DIY method, personally i didnt care for it considering amount of money i had invested in cards.   It does work on DIY.  But personally i would use it temp and get the cable.

If you use the cable computer turns on/off both power supplies.   Its a very nice setup.   And PSU's are considerably cheaper since you can buy 2 and split load.

Thanks for the advice. Both of my questions may not even matter now tho for a couple reasons. I looked up my mobo and there is only one 1x pci slot. So I could only have one more card on it unless there's legacy to 16x out there...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130250

Also I do have another mobo, I was just trying to consolidate to one rig, but if I can't have all 4 cards on it then I may as well just do half and half, two cards per rig. The other mobo is crappy with one x16 and a couple x1. Good information to know how easy it is to use two psu's tho! Thanks for the feedback!

Not a problem!  The two PSU is great.  Once you look at 1200+ watts and more for a good brand it just really gets up there on price.  Two makes it easier ROI Smiley.

one more question. I am having hdd troubles with the second rig, so for a day or two I want to try and put a third card on my main rig with the msi board (my 1x to 16x riser came). What if I have the second psu plugged into the mobo on the second rig, and into a card in the main rig? That way I have no chance of breaking the second psu from a DIY solution and I spend no money on a cable and I get my 550w power boost. is that dangerous?

Get one. They work fantastic. I'm using one now. And I have the same mobo you have, multiple cards are no problem. You can use up to 6 cards on this mobo if done correctly.

Where did you get your legacy pci to 16x cables? I would rather just have two rigs than spend another $20 for the add2psu thing. There are cheaper cables for that and they don't use up a molex. like this posted above

I got unpowered for now, will be getting powered soon. Just need some more cards. XRP sent me the 16x extenders, the 1xto16x I dunno...

possibly, but both psu's I am using are nice ones, and one I am borrowing, so cutting wires is out of the question. If I had two old 350w ones I found in the trash then yea I would try that method.

ok so I spilled water the floor above my rig. It went right through the floor and I found drops and splatters right next to my open rig. I found this about 30 min after the spill, and it was still running. I wnated to check under the mobo (its laying down horizontal) so I powered it off and took a look. No water or dampness.

I figured that it was fine and powered back up. Black screen for 10 seconds then shutdown as if I pulled the plug. I tried with just one card in and with only one card it stays on but no video out no bios no lights on keyboard. all four post lights on mobo are on. A drop could have splattered to somewhere on the rig but it was running until I turned it off.

Thoughts?

wellll I switched psu's and it works... problem found

I used a bread board style jumper wire and wiggled it until I had my power. I then insulated and taped the Jerry rig. Added safety to the gamble. I've got a home brew switch. However I'm looking for a cleaner switch as we speak.  I've got 1, 350w total.  250w is a buffer so it's pretty smooth.

The 650w runs the mainboard, fans, hard drives and usbs
The 700w runs the gpus

It's beautiful

So legacy pci to 16x risers work for mining? I read somewhere that it doesn't... do those risers need to be powered?
