Whats the difference between Religion and Spirituality?

I've seen so many posts on Atheism and Religion, but they don't seem to ever get to Spirituality.

Religion is about the worst thing that ever happened to humankind but it was unavoidable and inevitable. It is a system of management.

At our origins perhaps we were all slaves of aliens or some superior creatures who indoctrinated us with religion to make it easy to control us.

But spirituality is something different. That is when you start thinking for yourself. What has happened,  is that from time to time, very intelligent leaders of some religion, have started thinking for themselves and then suddenly they find themselves the head of a new religion. And then especially after they die, the people get crazy to pervert the deeds, and ideas, of what may have been an enlightened person, into a dogma that must be followed come high or hell waters. And when they start demanding that you all wear the same uniform, that's when it all goes back to a slave mentality.

I think this is because the religion of being a slave is all we have ever known.  And we are slowly growing out of this. And slowly more and more people are thinking for themselves.  The trick is that we keep thinking for ourselves instead of following somebody else blindly.

There is a good book on the subject

common belief systems helped build trust with strangers, allowing formation of larger groups.

Cooperation is what allowed us to leave Africa and conquer the world.  Religions provided that instant trust.
Jews trusted Jews, Christians trusted Christians and so on.

Most people get confused about the difference of spirituality and religion. Most of the time, the two concepts are interchangably used or understood. However there is/are diference/s between the two. Religion is an organized and systematized way of worshipping a known 'God' and an activity that includes supernatural belief to a supernatural being. On the other hand, spirituality, unlike religion, doesn't go with the process as the religion have. Thus, religion focuses on structure, whilst spirituality is based on the ability of oneself to think, or based on a person's self-consciousness.  Spirituality directly say something about our faith, while religion does not. We can have religion without faith and we can have faith without religion. These concepts are need to be understood and apply in order to avoid confusion.

Religion is the way to teach you about GOD, it is the practice of how you will communicate with GOD and spirituality is the effect of your relationship with GOD, the intimate relationship with GOD

It looks interesting. And that makes perfect sense that religion makes a cohesive group and that is better for survival.
I saw a PBS special once on how the homo sapiens were by far the most aggressive of all the hominoids, thereby beating all the others out of existence. Or this was the leading theory. Homo Sapiens were known for their aggressiveness and adaptability, and moving around a lot. Religion would be especially good for nomads,  because it's like taking your country with you, where ever you go!

Good point. Although the terms religion and spirituality are often used interchangeably, they can be something separate...structure and function.
Also spirituality can be a way, or means, or the currency between different religions. A spiritually inclined person from one religion, can understand the meaning behind a principle of another religion, despite cultural differences.

I agree, but a lot of people would say the same about both. Can you say why or more about your meaning?

Religion is the playbook, the rules forged from the culture, or maybe the religion came from the culture. And a bunch of people of one religion is a good way to move the identity of a culture, (country), around.

Spirituality, it seems in most religion has to do with the soul. The soul is a fascinating topic. In most religions the soul reside in the live body, but has the ability to in and out of the body,  and leaves the body upon death.

Bro I think you are trying to separate religion from spirituality, am I right? If so, how possible that religion can go without the union of spiritual understanding. In fact religion is built through every different philosophy of life which is spiritual beliefs are in. So for me religion could not possible without spiritual understanding, and I believe every kind of philosophy that can be found in religion is inspired by spiritual beliefs.

Spirituality, it seems in most religion has to do with the soul. The soul is a fascinating topic. In most religions the soul reside in the live body, but has the ability to in and out of the body,  and leaves the body upon death.

even today, there is no way to prove the existence of spirits and soul, so it is a very difficult subject to debate.

I will give an example of my African continent.

Africans believe very much in the spirit, so many of them even abandon hospitals because they believe that traditional medicine is the solution of their problems they really believe that healers invoke the spirits and because of this many people die when they could be saved in the hospital

but this reminded me of a very interesting story:

Traditional healers join dagga debate

"Other healers actually smoke it as well,” said Mkhabela.

How can we be sure that there are spirits? who was it that said that there are spirits and how did he know that there are spirits?

as I said at the beginning, this is a subject that we have no proof and even those who say they speak with the spirits (in this case the healers) are doubtful, because they never show you such a spirit ....

One day I went to one of those churches that say they take away evil spirits from the bodies of innocent people, well what I saw was something that shocked me, was something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akMWSwBZh5I

I wonder if what I saw was really true and possible or was it all part of a great acting, something like a great trick of magic, but fact is that until today I have not seen anyone show some spirit or soul.

this is a hard question that many anthropologists and sociologists tried to answer. one answer is that religion is organized and has strict rules. spirituality is personal and can be manifested in many different ways and has no clear rules to what is right and true.

Religion has positive and negative rule in our country because no religion can perfect, its like human is not perfect but we know the important of religion into human life, each religion provides their followers to common good only though from saving ourselves, its also gave from identity promotes, brotherhood, belongingness ,peace of mind ,harmony, and hope, feel secure and good, while in spiritually it probably to kind of worship ,but some christian will also debate the real worship of the lord.and because of that i will not confused to the fight of them, because in my  opinion the true worship   is to worship from spirit in the truth.

Both Religion and Spirituality are often classified as one but in fact they differ. Religion is an organized means by which people relate to a sacred and divine, while spirituality describes such relations when they occur in private, personally, and even in ways. In other words, Religion binds people of the same god. Spirituality is the individuals way of binding to a specific god. We cannot really tell what should a person have because there are people who have Spirituality or simply put the faith but no religion. On the other hand, there are people who have religion but no faith. Regardless of the that, we should always understand that these two terms are two different things.

To me, religion speaks more of organization doctrine and practices and 'spiritual' speaks more of personal experience. But as I say, they are both quite broad terms.

Do you think (like me) that there is a border between religion and science?
I think they are completely different concepts. Science is the study of the world based on evidence. Region is belief without evidence. However, I see no reason why one cannot use science to try to check ones beliefs, or dispute others beliefs. I find belief contrary to the accepted evidence to be irrational (despite its prevalence).

Or are there situations in science where religion is useful? Or situations in religion where science is useful?
I don't think religion is useful in science. Of course one can still study religions scientifically. I do think religious people should not ignore science.
We must remember though that religion covers both the organizations and the beliefs. A very large proportion of members of religions are in it for the organization more than the belief. I could easily see a situation where science could be used to further the aims of a religion (or even to create one and call it 'Scientology'. )
