As a community I think we all feel very strongly about Bitcoins. We like telling people about it because it's so good. I think most people end up loving them as soon as they start understanding what Bitcoins do and what they represent.

I thought it would be cool to promote it. Not for a business but because we love Bitcoins. And it will help new users understand them better.

What do you guys think about running banners on high-exposure sites promoting them to potential new users? Not just on financial sites but on the Oprah site and such. Reach as many people as we can. They could display the Bitcoin logo and some useful/helpful info for the folks out there who don't really know what they are. I think it will help further adoption.

We could crowdfund an ad campaign. Use volunteers.

Thoughts?

I think a more effective way to promote Bitcoins would be to our social networks.  If we all posted trending Bitcoin related articles on our Facebook accounts we could reach a huge audience and our network would be more likely to read what we posted.

Making a Bitcoin viral video is the way to go.

Imagine if a Bitcoin video got as many views as Gangnam style

Or even some views close to those prank videos like the one driving the ferrari picking up the girl and then he says he doesn't like gold diggers

Viral bitcoin videos can certainly drive a huge interest into bitcoin

Banner ads are a good idea, but we need more fundamentals:

A US-based exchange geared to individuals (vs. merchants like coinbase) making it easy to buy and sell BTC and with an anti-hacking guarantee of some sort backed by a legitimate insurance company or reserve. Ie. I don't have to send funds overseas to trade my BTC

Some corporations to start accepting bitcoin for payment. Not just one subway, the entire chain.

A simple offline wallet or device that is both transaction-friendly and does not require a PhD to figure out how to avoid having the thing hacked.

Banner ads are great but the above are a prerequisite IMO
