It works even without external fan.

But it is not cost-wise idea to CPU mine  Smiley

Depends on the alt coin.

You'll get nowhere with any coin that Bitcoin asics can mine.

You'll also get nowhere with scrypt coins at this point because they're already on GPU'S.

You can mine something like Primecoin on your CPU,  though.
