To me at least this seems a tad silly. 'Blockchain' is so fluid that I don't see how anyone or anywhere can ever stake a permanent claim to anything.

In Russia everything is controlled and manipulated by FSB - this is not a normal country, Putin is former FSP officer after all and at this point, he is basically a dictator.
There is no real political class in Russia - you either are part of the system or you are assassinated if you know too much.

You are right here, blockchain is not something which will give you dominance it is a new technology but you can't win a war with it or dominate a war.
And somehow I doubt that Russia will create the most successful cryptocurrency in the world and will control its blockchain...

Don't think of it much, I doubt they can create the world's most successful cryptocurreny(a coin better than blockchain) in the world and control it's blockchain. Treat it as Russian's wishful thinking.

It would take the form of them trying to create the new world's best crypto with the goal of dethroning btc. Of course that thing they will create will be centralized, and it would be something with a lot of use cases (in their country).

they can use blockchain technology like anybody else but as soon as they start thinking in terms of "it belongs to us" then they are effectively making it centralized and doing that will put an end to what THEY create.

the blockchain technology in form of a currency becomes successful when it is used by something like bitcoin in a decentralized way not the old centralized way that we are trying to get rid of.

There is no doubt that the Russians have some advantages in the block chain technology, but I think the block chain belongs to the whole world, not only the Russians, the Americans, the Japanese, the Chinese, the Europeans, the Europeans, and even the India now have their own characteristics in the bitcoin industry. Everyone is connected.

Blockchain dont belong to anyone. Good example was last Monero update. Monero update protocol with a hardfork every half year.
Two separate groups took old chain and one named it XMO https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/monero-original/  and other named it XMC https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/monero-classic/   This blockchain is on diferent exchanges on some named as XMO and on the others XMC.

I am all for it, keep your centralized garbage with you. Bitcoin is everyone's money and protocol, which is exactly why it will grow out to be an ultimate safe haven and sign of freedom. People don't yet appreciate and realize how powerful Bitcoin is in that regard, but that will come once people more than ever are trapped inside this rotten system.

They do? What earthly advantage do they have? Some of the developers are from the Russian region, but that is not going to benefit Russia at all. Even the talented Russians are interested in setting up companies outside Russia.

Well, let's give it a few years before we can be totally sure that it can shake off any attempt. Despite the twitchier posters here who claim it's constantly under attack from governments, I don't believe they've lifted a finger beyond being mouthy and enforcing existing laws.

I'll guess many of them have researched scenarios with plans of action to attempt a proper disruption. Maybe one day something'll leak and it'll give us a chuckle or make our hair stand on end.
