Oh why, oh why did Theymos f-up the forums?  Mastercoin is not an altcoin.  Now, our crap is buried in all the nonsense of the altfreaks with their scams and constant announcements of free coins.  What a nightmare.

Does Mastercoin have to run on top of Bitcoin?
Well, currently it does, because that is the fastest approach to building Mastercoin. It may do so in the future.

However, in case there are some scalability or other concerns that make us not want to run on top of Bitcoin, we can switch it out for another decentralized layer e.g. a dedicated alt.

Reads like an alternate currency. Overall, it all reads like it is still work in progress.

Unless Theymos has some further insight, I can kinda see where he is coming from.

All coins have been distributed within a month? Now something that is not clearly described is added. Then you need those coins to use it. That's why they are valuable ...
