Where do people here get their coins from?  I set up a coinbase account and am waiting for my bank acct to be verified.  Seems like one of the best ways.  Coin to cash sounds good but looks a little amateur on the how to section of the webpage.  Local bitcoins looks interesting.  What is the most cost effective way to buy bitcoins?  I am looking to buy whole coins.

Many people buy from BTC-e or from other people. I suggest you take a loot at the options BTC-e has to offer or search on a marketplace where they sell BTC. You might be able to get a good deal but it is hard to find people that you can trust.

Probably the most comprehensive list of ways how to get bitcoins (exchanges, foundries, etc.) is here:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/FAQ#How_can_I_get_bitcoins.3F

Any usually you will just buy them at an exchange:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Buying_bitcoins

I used MtGox so far and had no problems with it, except that the price there is usually higher than at other exchanges. For the exchanges, you usually have to register with some way of identification. This takes some time, days to 2 weeks.

Coinbase is the best place to do it online without paying big fees or going through a lot of hassle (other than verification).

Our family was terrorized by Homeland Security.  Read all about it here:  http://www.jmwagner.com/ and http://www.burtw.com/  Any donations to help us recover from the $300,000 in legal fees and forced donations to the Federal Asset Forfeiture slush fund are greatly appreciated!

BTC-e sells them at a pretty cheap price, but some people have issues with their money getting stuck, so it's up to you if you want to take that risk I guess.

NO NO NO.
You are getting it all wrong.  Do NOT buy from coinbase, PLEASE.  They are turning into a dictatorship.
If you buy coins at a low price, and the price jumps up, coinbase will rape your money with an excuse of "high risk transaction".  If you don't believe me, look at the dozens of other members' complaints.

I'd suggest localbitcoins, and this forum.

Right now your best bet is to buy bitcoins from the community, thats how I am doing. Coinbase seemed like the best source, but they are unstable and canceling buy orders on a whim and waste precious time.

Localbitcoins seems pretty good but the prices are high.

What is the process for buying bitcoins on here?  I am looking to purchase two bitcoins.

What are some ways that the system for buying and selling bitcoins could be made easier and more safe from being ripped off?  Seems like improving this area could you really get a lot more people willing to try bitcoin.  I am new to this so I don't know the answer but I think about it a lot.

I've seen complaints, but I've never had any trouble. Not even when I bought during the $60 dip a few months ago. And it sure beats the heck out of going somewhere to meet strangers.

Personally I like using Coinbase as it is simple. If you're looking for the best possible price purchasing directly from an exchange is probably your best bet.

I put together a post not that long ago that covers purchasing Bitcoin.
