Is it possible to use risers in the pci 1x slots in a 4u case? I've never seen a 4u case in person so I have no clue how big it is. I understand you can fit big cards and most cpu coolers, but is there enough space to mount cards on a riser somehow?

If you look at this picture of my 4U case you will see that it is not really possible to do so unless you managed to rig up some kind of card holder but even then you only have about an inch or so between the current(stock) level of the cards and the case lid.

If you go with single slot 5770 or 6870 cards you can do 4x density in a 4u case with a Sapphire PureBlack MB like the one here.

I personally dont think this isefficient.

I am just getting drafts for my own custom case design that will:

* Carry 2 motherboards, 4 PSU, one behind the other.
* Be 5 Rack units high.
* Be totally optimized for airflow
* Carry 5 (!) cards per motherboards on extension cables.

The goal is a 40 double wide cards per rack design Wink

Setting up some mining operation at the moment - I order teh stuff half rack wise (40 cards) and I dont want to spend too much for rent.

That is quite an interesting case idea. Now, just how much does it weigh and what are you mounting it on - rails? tray? Pics!

I expect the drawings today. Rails - probably now, bu tthen you can buy some metal rails for rack cases. I will put up drawings and pictures as I get them. The specs say 100 cm deep, 19", 5 RU Wink So, it is perfect for 16 systems per rack Wink Custom made, as I said - price indication is around 200 EUR Wink

Are there any rackmount server cases out there with 8 expansion slots for under $100? I've been looking for months... =(

Rackmount cases normally cost more - they need more stable material than normal once.

I get one for 12 cards in hopefully a week. On 2 boards, behind each other. That is 12 dual slot cards that live on extension cables and are decently switched Smiley 5 units high, cost around 250 USD.

he's having it custom made. btw, it's cheaper to just get two 4U cases for $50-80/ea than get a dual MB case for $250. Unless there's something I'm missing?

Maybe it's a small rack. Sounds awesome regardless. =)
