Bitmain launches the Z9 Equihash miner

Hi all, since there was some speculation about the actual temperature maximums for the Z9 mini, I contacted Bitmain and received the following information:

Ambient temperature: 15-35C
PCB Max Temp: 80C
Chip Max Temp: 125C

I was told the PCB and Chip temps are the thermal cutoffs where the unit will shut itself down. Also interesting that their specs on the Z9 mini info page state an operating environment temperature maximum of 40C, but they told me 35C when I contacted.

This is all FWIW, but figured it might be helpful. Also explains why in my environment, when I have the fan set to auto, my Z9 regulates itself to mid 70s C, despite having lower temps possible with a higher fan rpm. Seems 70-80C is perfectly safe for the unit.

lol I gaurantee you if you run chip temps at 125c for more than 5 minutes you’ll have a brick.

Yes, that's plainly obvious. They are thermal shutoffs for a reason. I don't think there is anyone advocating running the Z9 at 125C.

I'm simply sharing the info that was given to me to put anyone at ease who thinks 70C temps are unsafe for the unit.

However, I'm slightly concerned about the rising chip temperature due to the weather. I manually adjust fan speed so that the chip temperature lies below 75 degree, but right now it's at the fan's maximum speed. The weather is getting hotter here, so I just wonder if my miner will be okay with increasing temperature.

Any experience with chip temp. over 75, or even 80?

Hi I'm new here, but I run mine at 700... and the temps are 65 at worse. For me that extra 50 isn't worth the risk - so if youre concerned I would take peace of mind over squeezing out every bit of extra gains. You're already WAAAAAAAAAAY ahead past the 11ksols that was promised by Bitmain.  If you burn your board/miner you'll have 0 ksols.  Good luck

Thank you for your kind advice. I've just tested 700, and it's about 65-68 degree with 1.2ksol lower than 750, which is fairly acceptable.

However, I'm really concerned about the ROI, since Innosilicon A9 ZMaster (50ksol/s) has already been released with the promotion of 1+1. Also, ASICminer Equihash 40K is coming up this month, which may lower the profitability of my Z9. I would lower the frequency once I start to make real profits. I guess I gotta lower the frequency when the temp gets over 75 degree.

Anyway, thank you for your advice.

PS I've tested antpool for 1 day, and the rejection rate was fairly high, and I only received approximately 70% of income that I calculated from whattomine.com. Anyone with the same experience?

Prohashing seems to be the most profitable pool to be on - even though there's a glitch with their zcash mining as of today.

Flypool has worked for me, and Prohashing has worked for me for the pools so far.  The miners have been good for me other than that weird glitch the other day which sounds like there may have been some other issue going on.  So far so good. Just hoping the profitability holds up until next batch ships.  Fingers crossed.

TESTING HELP NEEDED: Anyone here with a Antminer Z9 Mini willing to test if our ASIC Registration Wizard works ok? We easily tested on a D3 that we already have but the integration of the Z9 was done through remote testing only. There are two ways to add a Z9 Mni to BetterHash:

• automatic
• manual

The manual configuration seems to be working just fine. It would really help us to know if the automatic configuration works as well. We are also interested to know if the speed reported in BetterHash is the correct one.

i oc'ed to 750MHZ and my temps are very good when the fan is at 100%...

all chips from 3 miner are at 57°C - 61°C

z9 mini default work: 10k sols
z9 mini OC avg.: 16k sols (1.6x the default)
z9 mini default watt: 300w

z9 default Work: 40ksols  (Or 4 minis.  Not likely to pull any surprises, as Bitmain is pretty consistent with their delivery)
z9 plausible OC: 64k sols
z9 default watt: 1150

z9 mini price batch 2: 850
z9 price: 3400/4 = 850

So, price wise you are paying the same for 4 minis as 1 z9.  If you have coupons from the first batch purchase you are probably better off buying the minis, imo, since you can only use one coupon per miner.  I just grabbed 5 minis in batch two at, before tax/shipping, 600 a piece using 1 coupon per miner.

The biggest advantage I can see is that you could get by with one large PSU and fewer PCIe power connections.  The full size Z9 says it has 7 connectors.  Four minis would be 16 connectors.

You could use one large PSU to power several minis, would just need a few PCIE splitters.

The Z9 has a pretty steep price point for such a late delivery.  I have a hard time seeing how that price makes sense.  They have to know with the batches they have sold and with the batches Inno is selling these will not likely be that profitable by the time they ship.  Seems like there is a disconnect here.

The overclocking potential isn't really known for the full-size Z9. Mini runs at 16k+ quite happily, the big one could be coming already overclocked.

More like 4 z9 minis glued together. Now overclock that. I'm pretty sure the z9 overclocked will do well above 40k
