The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

No thanks,

I love 5870 cards, and always keep my eyes open for them,

even with dual GPU's that thing is still way overpriced compared to two normal cards,
and it has a bastardized cooling system on it that doesn't lend itself to controlled venting of the cards.

The thing would blow hot air into an enclosed case like it was was an oven.

I've seen people pay $1100 for 6990s and these are far better. I posted it so I wasn't interested either, but I know some people will be.

Most likely. The specs on the cards are great, without a doubt.

It's just the price per gpu and the cooling on it I have a problem with.

If you aren't planing on venting it outside, or have an open frame case you could run two or three of those in a rig and have a lot of hashing power.

By the love of the Thrice Great Okapi? WHY would you spend $790 for a card that gets a little over 400 mhash? Please explain the insanity?

Two 5830s beat it by a long shot in power and money

EDIT... ok just saw it'a an x2.. still.... too expensive

with this same idea, why would anyone spend on a 6990 for mining? it's because of the density and saved space that carries the price premium. it's not always about the best output per cost. i personally don't buy into the whole high density thing, but for some people it's worth it.

Any one who spends $1100 on a 6990 for a mining rig is a complete dumb ass. You can't even justify the card for the lack of space it requires at that price. Your just throwing money out the window.

I agree though even for x2 this isn't worth it. The only time a 5870 is worth it is when its around 200 dollars.

Seriously for less than that money you could buy a mobo, power supply, and 4 5830s....  over 1300 mhash instead of 800

for some people 5830's are too weak.
some need to have 800mhash/sec per pci-e slot. Lol@8 6990's on 1mobo vs 8 5830's
it's the density. that is all

But it just doesn't make financial sense.. especially at the depreciating values of the tech and instability of the bitcoins...

5970's first retailed at $699 2 years ago (2009).
Today a used 5970 sells for $700-$800 on eBay.

In fact here is one with 39 bids, which is currently up to $900 dollars.
http://cgi.ebay.com/MSI-ATI-HD-5970-2GB-DDR5-2X256-BIT-/110726138419?pt=AU_Components&hash=item19c7caca33#ht_2954wt_1295

Depreciation? They are worth more now than they were years ago.
People with small mining operations just don't understand the massive benefit of 2 high powered GPUs per 1 pci-e slot.

When you add a lot of them, the savings due to not having to buy XL-ATX motherboards, new power supplies, cpus, RAM, are massive.

it's not as easy to tweak 6990's memory down to the 300mhz range, and also it might be hard to find as well

6990 are out of stock and can't be found anywhere.
Even newegg removed it from their inventory because the demand just can't be filled.

Tigerdirect sells it maybe once a month in batches of 5 cards.
