Hi, if i were to buy an AMD RADEON 7990 6GB for £406 to mine litecoins, could i just put it in my pc and start mining?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I believe so. But that card is going to be very very hot. Two 7970's on the same card running 24/7 is asking for trouble.

Yes you should be able to add it to your machine and start up your flavour of miner and connect to your favorite pool and start mining. Based on what you are looking to mine will determine which settings you use for your miner. (make sure you update the the catalyst drivers and you should be good)

Cooling is the big problem, you will need to have some very good cooling.  I had to take side off the pc and point a 12" fan at the card, just to keep it stable.

Edit: i should say, that was running powertune 20, 1400kh/s.  So it may be better if you run it slower and undervolt
