Hi guys,

on standard manufacture I was getting around 290mhash/s.

I have the Catalyst Control Centre however my overclocking options seem rather limited:

The setup you see there is giving me around 300mhash/s.
Fan speed is still pretty low - as I am using my main PC as mining PC, don't really want fans running at 100%! They're pretty noisy!

I've seen threads with people pumping out 400mhash/s +...
I am curious as to how people are achieving this?
When I max out all settings (fan speed to 100% to be safe then 775Mhz, the max I achieve is 310mhash/s.

Any suggestions?

Do I need to use a third party software? Any recommendations?

1) Install and use MSI Afterburner or Trixx.

2) Overclock & use flags for which ever miner/kernel you are using.

3) You will have to put up with the noise level or pick up a new better heatsink with low DBA fans, example:arctic cooling accelero HS.

Cheers,

Is it worth setting fan speed to 100% when overclocking then? What do you reckon is the max temperature I should not exceed? 85degrees celcius? I'll aim to keep it under 80 I think?

It is up to you if you think it is worth it, to me, I believe so.

85c is fine, I would not exceed @ 24/7 over 90c.

They can handle upto 100c -110c but I would not recommend that @ 24/7.

You could also try to use a tech station or remove all your components from the PC case, leave it in the open.

Changing the TIM that is if the stock TIM is still applied, could help significantly in keeping temps lower.

I'm still not able to alter the core voltage:

I went into settings and checked "unlock voltage control" and "unlock voltage monitoring" and restarted but it is still locked down...

Any idea why?

Thanks

Which brand/model 5850 do you own?

Most likely it does not have voltage control. Just like my XFX 5830 does not have voltage control.

If you are going to use afterburner make sure you did this. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18102.0

I'd also like to note that I had stability issues with my sapphire 5850's when I changed speeds in afterburner. If you seem to have the same problem try using trixx because I have had no problems with that.

You can put the memory speed down to 300, it wont affect your rates but it will give you a cooler gpu, and with a cooler gpu you can run the fan slower. Just dont go too slow (I wount go lower than 50 to 60%) because the other components on the card need airflow to stay cool as well.

Ionno, A couple of pros for my xfx 5830, I've got it clocked to 1010Mhz when I am at the pc and 1030 afk. 1010 creates 314Mhash/s, 1030 creates 322-324 Mhash/s, lifetime warranty. Cons, no voltage control, the fan went out three times on it, xfx sent me a "new" fan everytime. The fan would vibrate and sequel like a pig, I gave up, took the fan and shield off, garbage tied a 38mm x 120mm panaflo on the HS.

Some xfx 5850's are probably good, the factory overclocked ones, like my 5830 is factory overclocked + my overclocking = good Mhash/s.

Is your xfx 5850 factory overclocked?
