1. sign up for a digitalocean account here:  https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=261c189a4aeb

Deposit at least $5 and add coupon *LINUX13* or *GIT10* to get $10 extra bonus

2. create the smallest droplet 512 MB/1 CPU - choose Ubuntu 13.04 x64

3. login via ssh (use putty) with your vps login details

4. execute the following comands

make a swap file:

   sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=64M count=16
   sudo mkswap /swapfile
   sudo swapon /swapfile

install git:

        sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install git

clone cpu miner:

   git clone https://github.com/pooler/cpuminer.git

compile the source code:

   sudo apt-get install build-essential libcurl4-openssl-dev automake make

   cd cpuminer

   #Basic *nix build instructions:
./autogen.sh   # only needed if building from git repo (which we are)
   CFLAGS="-O3 -Wall -msse2" ./configure
   make

        apt-get install screen

        screen

   ./minerd --url http://whatever.poolyouwant.com:Port/ --userpass USERNAME:password

(for example: Dogecoin pool http:// pool.hostv.pl:9555 --userpass Dogecoinwalletaddress:password     or   http:// doge.crypto49er.com:9555)

when logging back again use "screen -r" to restore session

That's all!

Digital Ocean is a great hosting solution, really. I like it for their quick setup, SSD and low prices.

But mining on 5$ DO VPS will give you about 2kh/s per core. And it's such difficult already to mine doges.

Better join a pool.

And for those who found my small advice valuable and saved some money:

go to server usa 2 and you will get 6 khash/s.

create 5 instances in total you will reach around 35 khash totally

now join a pool. you will get around 2,500 coins daily, this method is currently used by myself

mining scrypt with CPU cloud host is totally useless..  you will make around 80 doggies per hour on a pool, how you want to get back the $5 monthly investment with such a low reward?

mining cpu coins with that is much more profitable..

yes, you can mine with both from pools. better choose version 2 - works with any pool type. make sure you also choose server usa2- has better speeds

you will make around 2,500 coins daily with 5 instances. the value of dogecoin is rising, small risk while keeping your pc turned off.

i see 10,000 coins are now sold for $8-$10-->> so you already have $5 profit after just 4 days of mining

when you're mining with your home computer you're consuming a lot of electricity... on vps electricity is zero.

if $5 is a big investment then better not start at all...

I can't get the final line to work... I type:

I'm using dogehouse pool and type ./cgminer --scrypt  -o stratum+tcp://dogehouse.org:3333 -u Weblogin.Worker -p Worker password (filling in worker & pass) and get errors such as:

bash: ./cgminer: No such file or directory

when I try to use the OP and just start with the .minerd command I get:

./minerd: unrecognized option '--scrypt'
Try `minerd --help' for more information.

any thoughts?

There are 4 server to select: NEw york 1, New York 2, San Francisco 1 and Amsterdam 2, i chose for my first droplet New York 2, is right?

Another question, if i create 4-5 droplet there is a major consumption of my credit?

^yes it's correct. you will use more credit but will also collect more coins, faster.

tip: if you want to mine faster choose a plan with at least 2 cpus, difficulty is increasing so you will get doges faster

Is there a way to get a bigger rate then just a few kh??? maybe buying a bigger package will help?
Also, you get $10 for free, what do you do with them? does it mean that if i am going for the $5 per month plan when i get $10 free i have another 2 months free?
Last question, this is to much work for me, when you say that you will setup everything for 1k dogecoin will it be everything so i will be ready to start the cloud mining?
Waiting for your response.

I will try to answer all 3 questions above:

1. to kill a session type "screen -X -S [session no.] kill"

2. buying a bigger plan helps / you are paying per hour until all credit ends - yes I setup everything, you just connect to the pool

3. kill each session like shown on point 1 - then start a new one with "screen", connect to the pool and restore it next time you login with "screen -r"

Don't bother with this, it's a waste of time.  Here is my response when I asked to increase my droplet limit:

"There has been a response to your ticket:

Hello!

Cryptocurrency mining is very CPU intensive, and due to the shared nature of our CPU allocations large-scale cryptocurrency mining will seriously affect the quality of service we can provide to the neighbouring servers on the same hypervisors as servers running cryptocurrency mining operations.

So, while we do not specifically prohibit cryptocurrency mining, we do restrict accounts doing so to prevent large-scale operations from affecting our infrastructure.

Therefore, at this time, we do not provide droplet limit increases to accounts currently engaging in this activity.  This includes opening additional accounts for the purpose of mining.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but we have to do our best to provide fair usage for all our users.

Regards,
Support Team
DigitalOcean"

is number of hasrate going up proportional with number of cores? meaning if i double the cores i double the hasrate? e.g. hasratedouble=1core -> 2cores
is number of hasrate going up proportional with size of ram? meaning if i double the size of ram i double the hasrate? e.g. hasratedouble=256mb -> 1gb

It never was profitable.  ~2kh/s on the $5/mo account..

If you crate 4 droplets (ie 4 virtual cores) you can get 8kh/s, but you are no longer paying $5/mo anymore.

i had 6 khash/s per droplet (smallest one), with 5 droplets i've mined 7,500 coins for around $4 credit, which can sell on ebay for example for $10 or more.

there are a lot of mining factors, the problem is that mining is never the same, difficulty changes, you never know what value will the coin have in the future, it could not be profitable now, but the same amount could be later and so on.

but please don't say it never was profitable since i've used it and it worked - at least for me - of course there is no 100% guarantee

i still have $9 credit left from $15 and i've also mined earthcoin and secondscoin...

can't believe the extent of stupidity that is prevalent around here.

just so it is clear for the uninitiated.

(1) you don't waste resources mining scrypt coins with a CPU.
(2) you don't rent cloud resources to mine scrypt coins.
(3) use a profitability calculator before you waste resources mining.

.... finally....

(4) never underestimate the stupidity of eBay buyers.

can't believe the extent of stupidity that is prevalent around here.

just so it is clear for the uninitiated.

(1) you don't waste resources mining scrypt coins with a CPU.
(2) you don't rent cloud resources to mine scrypt coins.
(3) use a profitability calculator before you waste resources mining.

.... finally....

(4) never underestimate the stupidity of eBay buyers.

1. of course. but not everyone owns a gpu. i never said cpu is better than gpu for scrypt.
2. this can be an option when you don't have options like gpu (when you own a laptop and you still want to mine or don't want to pay electricity)
3. always use a calculator - difficulty is a factor - when used in 1st day is different from 10th day - you can make 1,000 coins the first day and 100 coins the 10th day
4. i don't recommend ebay for money exchanges - you will get your paypal frozen

it's just an option after all; if you own a gpu start mining with it, it will be be more profitable of course, i've never said something else

Merry Christmas everyone!

I have $9 credit at digitalocean and tried to set up this mining  procedure but couldn't get it right myself. Can you setup for me and I pay you 1000 dogecoin worth of currency either in payza or BTC as I don't have any Dogecoin.
Also have you considered mining PTS I think its more profitable http://earn500month.blogspot.com/2013/12/digitalocean-cloud-mining-guide-for.html
Above PTS procedure also couldn't work for me and I got some error "No such directory"

Well, I used that free credit to creating 5 virtual clouds of Ubuntu 13.10 x64 (8cores 16GB) getting about 26khs from each. I dunno if I do something wrong, but I'm using this (below) for setup coz it's much quicker and easier and don't have any problems so far.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install build-essential libcurl4-openssl-dev

wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/cpuminer/files/pooler-cpuminer-2.3.2-linux-x86_64.tar.gz

tar -xzf pooler-cpuminer-2.3.2-linux-x86_64.tar.gz

apt-get install screen      (dunno if I really need this step coz it's working w/o it too, so probably this step could be passed with new version of ubuntu 13.10)

screen     (then press 2times space button and write last command which is in below)

./minerd --url stratum+tcp://server:port --userpass worker.name:password -s 1

OK.  Just for $hits and giggles I decided to set-up the DigitalOcean cloud mining.
The cheapest DigitalOcean plan ($5) for two droplets ($5 x 2 = $10)

I pointed at http://www.multipool.us and it's mining away.

I had to message DigitalOcean tech support (opening a support ticket) to ask them to add another droplet.  I included the URL of this thread and told them I was trying to CPUmine.  They responded that I was allowed 5 droplets and I activated my 2nd droplet.   i.e. My first $5 DigitalOcean droplet was limited; I could successfully get one droplet up and mining but needed to open a support ticket to request adding any other droplets.

You should just open 5 droplets and only after you opened them and they are running then you could make all to mine.

All is well.

Mining away.  Sometimes it looks like 20 kH/s on DOGE... sometimes only 6 kH/s on MOON.

Multipool.us was working good until this morning.  Saw the timeouts from my droplets on DigitalOcean, logged into Multipool.us and saw

Code:
Update: DB issues forced a rebuild. Please switch to Another pool for Now. Things Should be Back to normal by Morning. coins Are safe.

Hmm I have a non-cloud based VPS that's sitting there doing nothing. This method is not limited to Digital Ocean and would work on any VPS with root access via SSH, yes?

Ofcourse it's not limited, you can try to mine, but if your provider is not allowing these type of using his vps, then you could be banned.

Great minds think alike.   I instantly toggled to the Middlecooin.com:3333 pool until Multicoin.us came back online.

Quite content with the little test hashing in the cloud.  Its nothing like my 230 Gh/s Avalon box but its a fun way to learn.

Isnt it better to buy a 6970 for $75 off craigslist and mine at 477kh/s and sell it after a month for $75? Thats like the cloud mining suggested here for 10 years but with zero cost.

Disclaimer, Im doing just that except Im not selling the 6970s. AND the 6970s I bought from a gamer already are in demand for $175/ea.

I'm only seeing 3khs on each of my droplets.

I see that you have 8 core VPS machines.
