I don't understand why the Bitcoin donation amount isn't lower. Nobody right now would donate 10 BTC if that's equivalent to over $4,000. I personally only want to donate about $50 as that's all I have to give monthly. I wouldn't just give a payment once. I do feel as though it's more genuine when it's a monthly payment to show that genuine care for the community and how well it's thriving. It's wise to take support from time to time but demanding it is a different situation and I'd never condone that. Bringing myself back to the donation status, I don't feel beggars can be choosers. If we donate to you, you should take what amount we can give.

Theymos did that probably so the number of Donator will not explode drastically Roll Eyes
Imagine if Donate amount is lowered with today's prices
Everyone can be a donator that way, and why would anyone be a donator if that rank is almost achievable by almost everyone here

P.S Forum actually doesn't need donation anymore since they got a big ads with a bunch of BTCs paid for that Wink

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

I believe you can still donate lower amounts.
Well yeah but can you actually get donator status with that amount? That's what I meant actually.

Fine, I see your point but still, if I donate something I do strongly feel it should be my right to be labeled a donator either way. Not everyone has 4k to give randomly to a website and that's what I'm actually trying to convey here.

There is no minimum threshold for becoming a donator.
There's just a minimum threshold for receiving the "Donator" title.
Feel free to donate $50 a month if you like.

As it is right now, I personally would not donate to the bitcointalk.org forum anymore.
The main reason being that the forum is already sufficiently funded by selling ads.
Either way, I see it as an unfair advantage to people who basically have that kind of money to give. You are correct in pointing out the fact that the site is funded with ads now so maybe I won't donate. I think more would though if you gave them that title for donating a certain amount monthly. Besides, money eventually runs out. The 4k you gave (or perhaps you donated when BTC was worth $1 each) you were considered a donator by giving $10 so yes, that is the point I'm trying to make.

Edit: actually, I don't want to assume. When did you donate your BTC? What price was BTC at when you donated?

if I donate something I do strongly feel it should be my right to be labeled a donator either way.
The act of donating itself is defined by not requesting something in return.
Otherwise, it would be a service you're buying.

The arbitrary rule that you're rewarded a status title for your donation above a certain threshold is just that, arbitrary.
It's like in my local zoo. If I donate a handful bucks there, they won't be hanging a plaque with my name next to the tiger's enclosure. If I donate a couple thousand bucks, they will.

When did you donate your BTC? What price was BTC at when you donated?
I don't remember precisely, but it had to be somewhere near 10$, so I donated some 200$.

Yeah, well, I'm gonna go build my own blockchain. With blackjack and hookers! In fact forget the blockchain.

People are always moaning about the amount of coins they would have to donate to become a 'Donator' or 'VIP'.
Yeah some members donated 10 & 50 bitcoin's back when the price was a lot lower.

Who cares though?

It's just the way it is, nobody is begging you to donate anything now.

Maybe a bit less, but there should still be a significant minimum price to prevent scammers turning low accounts into 'top' accounts as validation for a quick turnaround scam.

It's not about if they're asking or not. It's more about the equal opportunity scale. Back then, you had to donate $10 to be a donator. Now you have to donate $4000.

10 BTC is 10 BTC, so that would be one of the benefits of being an early adopter.

I don't see how it would be fair to those who've already donated, especially the ones who held and stuck around since.

If we were on USDollartalk.org, I'd probably side with the YoBit spammer on this,
but since we're on Bitcointalk.org, 10BTC back then and 10BTC right now are the same.
If you talk about equality, how can you take the dollar equality over the bitcoin equality?

The main reason why the threshold has not been lowered is that the forum really is not in need of additional money right now. The original intent behind asking for donations was to be able to pay for ~a month of hosting with the ~$50 worth of BTC (~10 BTC) that donators would pay, however hosting is donated (I believe -- it used to be donated by PIA, but I am not sure what happened with that), and the forum now has hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bitcoin.

If the forum was in greater need of money then I would not be surprised if the threshold to donate (with some kind of reward/tag/bage) was lowed substantially

Not true, like most things you post.

The "threshold" has not been lowered because that would be unfair to people who already donated.

If the forum was looking to raise funds, I think it would be better to introduce a "Supporter" level that you can reach by donating 2 BTC.
