I like all the pictures of all these crazy homemade rigs and wall-mounted arrays, but I'd like to see what you guys have running in normal computer cases.  What I like to call "Living room miners" or "Office miners".  I'm sure there are quite a few who didn't post in the other thread simply because they don't want to post their case among these rack-mounted monsters, so I figured I'd try to start another.

My case isn't spectacular, but it has to be nice since I use it in my living room Smiley

CoolerMaster CM690 case fitted with 6 coolermaster fans and soundproofing foam.
Intel Core2 Quad Q8400 @ 3.8Ghz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 CPU Cooler
8GB Crucial Ballistix @1066Mhz OC'ed to 1200Mhz
ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard
2x Radeon HD 5830's crossfired overclocked GPUs @975Mhz Mem @320Mhz
---->Top card is Sapphire 5830 Xtreme, bottom card is ASUS EAH-5830 DirectCU.  The ASUS is much better!
Thermaltake 750W modular PSU
Scythe fan controller
RAID 0 with 3x Spinpoint F4's (320GB*3=960GB)
250GB Spinpoint F4
1TB External eSATA

GPU temps 67-72*C

CPU Temp 40*C

Very nice and quiet, even with all my fans maxed.  GPU fans run at 60% for my top card, 50% for the bottom one.

All my intake fans have washable filters to keep the dust out.  Works great, the inside is still spotless!

Still need to work on my cable management a bit more:

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

@catfish
Looks like u connected the PCI-E extender to another extender.
Didn't know u could do that. What is the MAX length for PCI-E cables?

Not sure. However I *do* know that daisy-chaining PCIe extenders works both for low-power cards like the 5670 in this pic, and the overclocked 5830 in my second frame rig. The frame rig has an x1->x1 extender daisy-chained to an x1->x16 extender, no Molex power augmentation. And it works fine.

I haven't tried more than two extenders chained together - I only did it because I had to. In the case of the Antec case (heh), the 5670 had to go in the drive bays to have a second fan blowing air at it - so extra length was essential. In the frame rig, I wanted the hot dual-slot cards to be spaced equidistant to get decent airflow. Check out the 'show us pictures of your rigs' thread (the 'other' one with the mad open frame stuff) for my double-logic-board twin-PSU 6-card frame - ensuring all 6 cards get fresh air meant that the leftmost card's extender wouldn't reach any logic board PCIe slot. So I used two extenders.

Given that the 5830 has two PCIe power lines from the PSU, the real proof of the concept is the 5670 in the Antec case - all the power that GPU pulls is PURELY from the PCIe slot. There is *no* auxiliary power feed from the PSU. It's *all* coming through those two extenders chained together... and it's been running overclocked to 900 MHz core (103 megahash/sec) for weeks now, stable as a rock. No fires yet!

I can't see many reasons to use three normal-length extenders chained together (I've used Cablesaurus brand, shipped from the US, and the 71leven eBay vendor to get next-day no-import-tax delivery in the UK - the 71leven UK extenders are, dare I say it, better build quality than Cablesaurus) unless you've done a NASA on your frame rig design and mixed up centimetres and inches (sorry, couldn't resist) Cheesy

However please note that I don't own any cards more powerful than the 5850 series. The 5850 is alleged to be more power-efficient than the 5830, so my overclocked 5830s (hell, ALL my cards are overclocked, so it's redundant mentioning it Wink ) probably suck the most power. But even if my juiciest card eats 200W, 150W will be taken from the lower-resistance direct-to-PSU feeds, and the remaining 50W from the PCIe slot (this is my understanding - happy to be corrected by any EEs here). And I don't really think *any* of my cards are *really* pulling 200W.

If you've got some monster dual-GPU card like a 5970 or the big 6990 (?) things, there's a good chance that the card will pull the full-fat 75W max spec power from the PCIe slot as *well* as the full power from the auxiliary power feeds. And my daisy-chained unpowered PCIe extenders may melt and catch fire with 75W but not with a max of 50W. Remember that's 6.25 amps through those thin-gauge ribbon cables (yeah, they are duplexed, but 6.25A is lots of current for such a thin wire), compared to my theoretical maximum of 4.16A. At the very least, it'll create enough resistance to cause a noticeable voltage drop on the supply via the PCIe slot. YMMV.

IMO if you're running a heavy-duty card (compared to my mid-level cards) on x1->x16 extenders, or worse, daisy-chained x1 extenders, then overclock the card and monitor the temperature of the ribbon cable with a laser thermometer. If it gets too hot (cable max temp spec is often written on the cable) then try a different approach (or use Molex-augmented extenders) Smiley

Awesome, laser thermometer!!!

LOL

I really enjoy the insane mining rig pictures as well. But my wife would never allow me to have such things at home. Thus I needed a mining rig with a very high wife acceptance factor Grin I really love the the old Chieftech Dragon Towers:

But in order to build a mining rig out of this case it needs some tuning  Cool

At night and on cool days the Cape Cora HF is cooling three HD 5870 @900MHz with Memory underclocked to 195MHz and a Phenom X4 955 BE passively without problems. However the GPUs needed some tuning as well  Grin

At day however there are three radiators who kick in to take care the system stays cool (one 120mm radiator at back and a dual 80mm radiator at front. Both hidden inside the case blowing the hot air out).

This systems makes 1.2 Ghash/s (each 5870 ist quite stable at about 404 MHash/s) My Mainboard is an ASRock 890GX Extreme4 which features an additional Radeon HD 4290 onboard GPU which is not capable of mining. But I use the onboard chip as primary GPU and thus are mining with all three 5870 GPUs at highest possible aggression level even if I'm using the PC for work, watching HD movies or playing not too current games without any performance issues.

The system runs stable even at 36 centigrade room temperature (the highest temperature so far). GPU temperature is even at such high room temperatures not higher than 65 centigrades. And the mining rig is really calm. If you don't know there is a PC running you wouldn't even notice it is running. Water cooling rocks! Grin

[chieftec case with side radiator]

sweet Smiley

I also have that case, and have though of running my dedicated miner in it (its open air atm). wont be on water as yours is though Sad thought of 4 x 120 side fans, plus replace the 2x80 front/rear with 2x120s front/rear. dremel ftw!

got any inside the case pics?

Awesome, laser thermometer!!!

LOL

Pretty useful and inexpensive tool - I think they're brilliant...

hmmm lol i guess you dont know why i laughed.

but there is no such thing is laser thermometer.

What you have is Infared Thermometer with Laser pointer so you know what you're pointing the meter at.

Thanks for the laugh.

Why don't you just fuck off, you know *exactly* what I was talking about, and you have shown your preference for smart-arse masturbation over any real content. Of course there is 'such thing is laser thermometer' (sic - and yes, I laughed at your infantile grasp of English grammar) - it is the most common terminology used for laser-sighted devices that measure temperature by means of black-body emission (which, at human-range temperatures, happens to be in the infrared wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, as you read on Wikipedia). Try Google, you won't find a load of 'no such thing is laser thermometer' Cheesy comments - you'll find sites selling the devices and descriptions of how they work.

Looks like I've wasted my time yet again - trying to be reasonable in my responses to yet another child on the internet pretending to be (a) dominant, and (b) intelligent. You are clearly neither of the two, and also have plenty of other deficiencies - it is as clear as the summer sun.

I'm not actually breaking the intentions in my previous statement - saying I wouldn't defile myself by debasing myself to your level - in this case I'm happy to go further. I can't see you having the courage to behave like this anywhere other than on the internet, you are a snivelling little worm. If you think that 'correcting' *me* about my usage of the *most common* nomenclature for laser-guided infrared emission pyrometers makes *you* look intelligent and *me* look foolish, then I will continue to roll my eyes and hope that you grow up in a decade or so. On the 6-sigma probability that you are an older adult, then just go pay to get a blowjob... it sounds like you are in quite desperate need of relief.

If you want to get into a pissing contest about who is the most intelligent then be my guest. I'll even graciously give you half an hour to scramble around Google and Wikipedia to attempt to sound educated. However I'm not responding to any more of your trolling. If you come up with something actually worthy of comment and discussion, in a courteous manner, then that is a different matter.

Hope this bite to your troll is good enough to satisfy you. It seems pretty clear that it doesn't take much to make you giggle like a schoolgirl - please remember that there are plenty of serious, highly educated professionals in the Bitcoin market and on these forums, and your puerile attempts to wind people up simply reduce the signal-to-noise ratio. So does this post, of course, but in the absence of any ability for instant retribution (you're hiding behind your keyboard, and if I decide to go back 30 years to when I was a blackhat for the lulz, it will still take time to do a clean job), a rude forum post is the only option.

Have a nice evening.

LOL awesome! i love the irony in your post.

I bet after that long post, you will head right to a porn site and start jerking off? Make sure to use that laser thermometer eh?

I love young kids hiding in mommy's basement. Cheesy. Your posts always give me good laughs, i dont know how to repay you , take btc?
