You need a healthy trading place to build initial value up. A currency needs some backing to work and that only comes from trading.

Otherwise people will just all dump at once and there'll be no incentive to buy so it quickly bottoms out (see TIPS).

As long as people don't lowball, trading before an exchange happens is good.
