It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

You can send in GBP to bitstamp.

Check out BitcoinATMTalk - https://bitcoinatmtalk.com

When transferring from your bank you don't have to change Sterling to Euros - said in GBP and you should get a batter rate when converted at the other end (should but not guaranteed!)

Why don't you just go to localbitcoins to get your bitcoin, using £?

All the banks will charge you for exchanging to another currency from £. One of my bank even take the p, by charging me the exchange rate, and admin charge, then also a charge for changing it to another currency. I will not make this mistake again.

I've heard about people having some problems with SEPA transfers to bitstamp from Spanish banks.

You will want to send USD to bitstamp as that's the currency they operate in.
Currencies Direct in the UK works. You agree on an exchange rate beforehand, send the GBP to currencies direct account in the uk and then they transfer to Bitstamp, making sure they include in the transfer the reference number that bitstamp gives you !!!
