I've only passed through San Jose by train (LA to San Francisco along the Pacific) and all I remember was that the train station was right beside the HP Pavilion (home ice for the San Jose Sharks).

Not very useful, but I'd take the train if you have the choice between that and taking a bus!

amtrak is the train line.. not sure if i have to pre-purchase or if i can just buy the ticket same-day.

I had bought my Amtrak ticket the day of, but this was 3+ years ago...
