Gift giving during the holidays just took on a whole new meaning. eBay, the parent company of PayPal, filed patent application 20130339188, “Gift Token” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on June 18, 2012. The USPTO published the application on December 19, 2013. The technology was invented by its engineers from Tamilnadu, India and assigned to eBay Inc. of San Jose, California. “…Products can be specified for which the token cannot be used to purchase. For example, a limitation upon the use of the token can specify that the token cannot be used for the purchase of alcohol or cigarettes. Rather than not allowing such items altogether, a limit can be placed on the amount of such purchases in a given time period. Whenever a Bitcoin-related item is listed on Ebay, they are quick to take it down and ban the user. Then why is this sudden love for the digital currency?

These are all trivial things that could be done with a small subset of Bitcoin functionalities.
If anything it reminds me how awesome it's for Satoshi to gift the world with Bitcoin, which would have allowed a corporation to apply for and be granted thousands of patents if it were to be created by one.

Well.... let them make their own digital currency. But JP Morgan failed to do the same just a few days ago. What makes them think that they might be able to achieve it? They have Paypal so they already do online commerce, possible extension to their system as an alternative to the Bitcoin Network, similar to the closed ecosystem idea with a bunch of internal bitcoin based clients for their companies products with private keys that can only be used with their services replacing Gift Cards as secure without time limits or monthly fees for having the cards on standby, then sell them in store do huge PR for them offer discounts for using them yada yada yada But that's speculation |

Ebay owns PayPal. The question is whether it orders PayPal to integrate Bitcoin, or not. |

OK so this is probably an evident question but I'm going to ask it anyways because I don't know the answer.
Does bitcoin via its shared platform have built in patent protection? Are patents being filed when the developers come up with new functions? Can corporations effectively steal bitcoin's technology?
I'm guessing that with all the VC money floating around, the answer to the last question is no, but if anyone can elaborate that would be great.

"Can corporations effectively steal bitcoin's technology?" No, because bitcoin got there first. You can't file patents for technology already invented and in use. Some may try though ;-) |
