As folks already noted here - you don't need to read and understand Modern Money Mechanics in order to use US dollars or Libyan dinars or credit cards.  So, in theory, consumers and merchants can also use bitcoin without reading Satoshi's paper, setting up mining rigs, or compiling the code. While reality may currently be different, this theory is totally viable.
