Can you outline what is going to happen at block 20055 and exactly what the new changes do?

The new difficulty algo will be active from block 20055. It will readjust difficulty at block 20130 to 4K I believe. After that you'll see difficulty adjustments every 144 blocks (with a target period of 24 hours).

oh crap i nearly forgot about this.. and we are at 20056.. yeah it might be a while  before the diff drops. You might have wanted to do that adjustment at 20060 instead of 20130, this is going to take ages.
