Running two different graphics cards for mining?

Hey all,

I was lucky enough to acquire an AMD 7990 which will be arriving tomorrow. I currently have a GeForce GTX 670.

I was wondering if it's possible for me to run the 7990 as the primary display driver and still keep the GTX 670 for mining only?

Is it as simple as plug and play? Or will there be more complicated steps I'll need to take to accomplish this? Or is it not possible at all? Keep in mind, I only want to use the older card for mining alone.

Sancho, your plan is flawed. The GTX 670 can do about 200 kh/s, the 7990 can do over 1000 kh/s. So keep the GTX670 as your display driver and use the 7990 to mine. Of course, whether you can run AMD and Geforce on the same computer, which is probably what you're really asking, is harder to say.

nVidia and ATI cards don't typically play well together.  You'd want to stick with similar brand cards, at least.  If possible.

Risky, no.  Not risky, it just wouldn't work as far as I'm aware.

As a total GPU miner newbie; those are my questions. Any help would be much appreciated:

I do have an old Mobo/CPU combo lying dead for years (AM2+ I believe, having Phenom x3 720 as the CPU but cannot check the Mobo and the chipset right now).
The board does support Crossfire/has 2 PCI-e ports.


- Would it matter if the ports are running 16x or 8x? Is 8x PCI-e already fast enough for mining?
- As mining does not use Crossfire, running a 280x with an 7950/290 is completely fine?
- Of course it does vary greatly depending on the fluctuations and coin choice but is 2.5$ /day with a 280x a decent number? (2.5$ as net profit).

Yes, however, you would need to use Hydra motherboard. Most normal motherboards cannot support them together. And also, GPU mining is already out of he game for Scrypt based coins as ASICs were developed for them.

Yes, however, you would need to use Hydra motherboard. Most normal motherboards cannot support them together. And also, GPU mining is already out of he game for Scrypt based coins as ASICs were developed for them.

True, especially as the new generation of scrypt ASICs are coming out soon.

It should work but I think you need to open 2 different program, CGminer and CCminer.

It should work but I think you need to open 2 different program, CGminer and CCminer.

That's if you can get drivers to play nice.  It's possible to do if all works right.  But your life is easier if you stick with AMD or GeForce. If your mining litecoin like i believe it said in first post i would suggest doing some ROI compared to power used before doing to much mining.

Generally mining is as demanding as gaming  (actually if you mine 24/7 mining wears down your graphics card a lot more than gaming). I never tested it but I am pretty sure that if your card needs a PCI-e 16x port you will not be able to run it on an 8x port at all no matter wether you use it for gaming or mining. But I guess it would be safe to try. My guess is that windows wouldn't even recognize it correctly.

As far as crossfire goes: You can run multiple crads just fine. for mining you do not even need the crossfire bridges because the cards are accessed independently by the mining software. All that is important is that the drivers are installed and the cards get both recognized by windows.

For the profit I cannot tell exactly since I only mine bitcoin. In my view making any profit at all with GPU mining is decent. Make use of it as long as it lasts because like was said before: When the new scrypt ASICs hit the scene GPU mining will once again be dead.

If you are good in building system and testing, you might make profit before everyone join in and do the same.

Both of those bolded statements are wrong.  Until the recent X11/X13 mining protocols, mining is more demanding than gaming.  No game causes you card to reach TDP, while mining scrypt can cause that.

Mining is not bandwidth intensive - you can place 16x card into 1x slots and they mine at full speed.

I'd try your hand at a non-Scrypt coin.  Perhaps one of the X11 coins like Darkcoin.  Scrypt is really hard to GPU mine anymore tx to ASICs...

Yes. Using both amd and nvidia in the same rig. No problems once you get it started.
