I started with DogeCoin as my first cryptocoin.  I'm having fun mining various coins on my lowly ATI 7750 card (~140 kh/s).  So far I'm up to 0.3 BTC after mining DogeCoin, CatCoin, MoonCoin, and now CoinyeCoin.  I wish I could get into actual Bitcoin mining but the cost of entry is so high with returns that are so low.

That seems like a recurring theme. People would like to be here for Bitcoin only but they feel that the cost of entry is too high for them. The community needs to solve that problem if they want more widespread use. Maybe it is time to spread the concept of mBTC or some other sub-whole-coin system.

Not everybody has to be a BTC miner. You can make your BTC mining other coins like this guy did. Any coins that have any longevity will eventually become unprofitable to small-time miners, so you just move on to another and trade the coins you make for BTC and it's essentially the same.

Not everybody needs to mine at all. People can just buy coins. If you were going to just buy coins instead of mining which one would you buy? If you can't justify buying a coin to use as money for purchases why mine it at all? I don't think overstock.com will be accepting doge anytime soon.

Exactly, that's why the only use of these coins is to pump and dump them. Get in early and nine whilst it's still profitable and then sell or swap for a useful currency like BTC.

I'm here for the community around the scrypt & cpu alt-cryptos, don't have much interest in Bitcoin or the other SHA-based coins.

I am here mainly for Bitcoin although it will be interesting to watch out if another altcoin will be able to solve the mining centralization problem better then Bitcoin in the long run.

I guess if they're traded on a reputable exchange there is a certain logic to that.

Came here for LTC and now mostly in GRN (Graincoin).  Newly listed on Coinedup.  Had good experiences following the IPO of CAT and RPC…I think Grain will be a good place to further diversify, especially given that it is new and very cheap!

Fascinating, very few new members are here for just Bitcoin. If the layout of this forum followed the direction of new membership then there would be a single small section named Bitcoin and the rest of the forum would be alternate cryptocurrencies.

I would like as many people as possible to vote. The alternate cryptocurrencies subsection just recently got sub forums. I guess management realizes how big a draw that section is.

I got seriously into bitcoin at the beginning of oct 2013. I also got into litecoin @ the same time. I really like litecoin because the dev is very transparent, works for coinbase, and his brother is the CEO of BTC China. I'm hoping LTC gets integrated with Mt. Gox soon, which will set off its adoption on bitstamp, coinbase, etc. I truly believe the future will contain many crypto's and BTC and litecoin will be the top 2.

I'm pretty new to actually buying cryptocurrencies, although I've been aware of bitcoin and the general mechanics of its operation for a while. I knew about it when it was at prices I don't even want to think about now actually, and almost bought in until mtgox crashed that first time from like 30 to 1. Being only an outside observer I wrote it off as a brilliant idea that wouldn't take off without a more refined iteration, or damaged goods. I can't kick myself too hard because I was a lot younger and bitcoin (still not easily accessible for most peoples' tech level) was a lot harder to buy then it seemed.

Anyway, I've gotten into dogecoin for fun and am totally enthralled by this whole world of cryptocurrencies (mostly doge and BTC at the moment). I wanted to join this forum because to mostly read information posted by people who know a lot more than me by virtue of experience. I am also excited by the vast opportunities that exist to solve problems or advance specific parts of such a fast growing phenomenon. I think that cryptocurrencies will produce an amount of value exponentially greater than where we stand now and the chance to be part of that is exciting!

I´m here for both, BTC and all sorts of altcoin.
I really hope that we´ll see an alt coin poping up that brings some real innovation again.

Does anyone feel that having so many different coins is diluting the value of all of them. Too much of a good thing maybe?

Do you mine or are you here just to learn about it and buy?

Yeah, but let the kids have their toys to play with. They'll grow out of 'em and move on to bigger and better things hopefully.

I don't know that you can discount it that easily. People feel disconnected from Bitcoin because of the reward issue. That needs to be solved before people will flock to Bitcoin again.
