Any tips for increasing chances of finding a block for your pool?

I was wondering if I would be better off adding nodes or somehow improving the performance of bitcoind? I know some pools restart weekly. Maybe I can setup another bitcoind on an amazon VPS and have poolserverj pull getworks from there as well? If anyone knows anything about good pool administration I'd appreciate the advice.
