My case

The layout of this forum is set up to treat bitcoin as a software project, but it has grown far beyond that.

Bitcoin is now a multidisciplinary field requiring experts in mathematics, physical sciences, engineering, and perhaps others.

Case in point: "Technical discussions" can be taken to mean quite a few things these days.  There is a type of discussion there that is extremely popular such as "How can I resolve this computing problem in this other language" yet questions about hardware and the science of cryptography itself seem to get buried under those.

• There is no appropriate place here for me to discuss how I think excitation of chlorine and other spin 3/2 nuclei can act as cheap true random number generators.
• There is no good place to discuss clever analog circuitry for bitcoin blockchain transmission
• Where does one get a number theory question explored these days?

The case is made.  What is this bastard suggesting?

This forum doesn't need to change much.  All that is needed is to copy it, and label the copy "engineering".  Another copy labeled "Physical Sciences"   Another copy labeled "Mathematics".

Marketplace and some exceptions exist which do not need duplicates.

Otherwise I am going to primecoin, because there is no way to talk innovation here.

Do you even mine?

Hi all

I'm looking to buy a 7950 because it's not expensive but I'm not sure if it will work for mining.

The one that I want to buy doesn't look like other 7950.

Let me know if it's a normal 7950

 Thank

Why does this happen?  Because no effort is made to project that bitcoin is serious shit.

Ok, there is money to improve this forum.  What.  The. Fuck.

Maybe I'll just keep putting new "Development and technical discussions" gems here as they come

Hi,

I am looking for expert in Bitcoin block header hashing algorithms in PHP, C, Python, Javascript
to discuss Bitcoin hashing algorithms from bitcoin.it in PHP, Python, plain C,
developing Javascript
as below

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Block_hashing_algorithm

THIS happens because nobody can tell what that board is for anymore, and apparently nobody gives a shit.  Yes I am angry.

Post in Off-topic, or in Development & Technical Discussion if you're proposing to use it with the Satoshi cilent, or in Project Development if it's more than just discussion.

It fits the description of the D&TD board ("Technical discussion about Satoshi's Bitcoin client and the Bitcoin network in general.") so I presume you can post it there.

Off-topic, or D&TD if it's related to Bitcoin.

It shouldn't be there and I reported it, in a matter of few hours max one of the global mods or gmaxwell will have it moved.

"This" happens on all boards of any size.  The reality is most people are lazy.  They don't take the time to educate themselves on where threads should go.  The forum probably needs more moderators.  The post volume is at an all time high.

An interesting experiment would be a fine/reward system in micro amounts.  Post in the wrong forum and it has to be moved you are charged 2,000 satoshis.  Help a moderator out by reporting a violation you receive 500 satoshi reward.  Waste the moderator's time by reporting something valid lose 1,500 satoshis.  Something like that.

Of course you did help the mods out and clicked the report to moderator link on those posts which made you angry?  Right?

How could number theory be considered off-topic?

That assertion is no less than insane.

If you think research in random number generation is off-topic, I have serious doubts about your understanding of just about anything that happens here.  I am going to step away from the keyboard because I'm having trouble keeping it together.

Number theory as it relates to Bitcoin = on topic.
Number theory in general = off topic.

Pretty easy to understand.

Number theory as it relates to Bitcoin = on topic.

That's right, and if something gets posted on topic, it get buried by posts about software.

Today I saw a core dev make a completely false statement about secp256k1.

Where do you want the innovators to share their ideas...here, or somewhere else?

Bitcoin mining technology is centralized as all fuck, as are payment processing solutions. Why would anyone bother to post block diagrams, circuit schematics, and test results of working systems here when they will only be buried by posts which are unrelated?  Inventor's alternative is to put the information in another location online, or perhaps file a patent, which is what just about everyone outside of the software community is doing.  And the results are pretty obvious - bitcoin moves sideways, not forward.

Bitcoin security is a big question mark, and businesses are left with no choice but to stay away from bitcoin, a system which offers them...what exactly?  Some source code?  Who does that help?

This forum COULD be the hub for innovation that makes bitcoin actually viable as a currency.  This forum is THE NODE for communications.  But it isn't...it's in the same state it was in in 2009 when bitcoin was basically world of warcraft.

I would be OK with it if there weren't six million dollars set aside to make it happen.

I'm not amused.
