My one and only post on this. I've been involved in some of the business development side of DRK and it has been clear to me that the brand needs to be adapted to suit wider adoption. I actually hold some DRK for somebody because his wife told him that he couldn't invest because the name sounded illegal. Businesses are immediately turned off by the name. The bottom line is that it needs to happen and whilst there could have been more community engagement, we need to pull together as a community and make this happen now the cat is out of the bag. The coin is still the same and has the same amazing potential for the future too. I'm in for the long haul. If anybody disagrees and wants to sell up, PM me...I'm on the market for more coins. I'm going to miss Vertoe though. Vertoe is going to be a difficult talent void to fill.

Price is being held up by Otoh, he will own a huge chunk of DASH. Seems like a risk, certainly a form of centralization.

There seems to be some misunderstanding about the re-branding effort that I would like to clear up.
We've been watching the various conversations pop up about re-branding since the inception of the foundation. When the name "Dash" was recommended by the community, we saw there was a decent amount of support for the name. It also represented what we're attempting to accomplish with Darkcoin, something fast and private as cash. It also sounds very friendly and works as a verb.
After this the foundation started doing some research and found a patent application for the name "Dash". If this patent application was approved it means we couldn't use the name at all. Instead of approaching the community at this point and saying we were thinking about rebranding, we decided to hire a patent attorney to challenge this. We were hoping that we would be able to clear up all of the legal work before approaching the community about the name.
To challenge the patent application required that we purchase the rights to Dashcoin. We need to be able to show prior use of the name "Dash" in order to be able to challenge the application. At this point we could have approached the community with what we were doing and asked the community to fund it, but this would have created a good deal of uncertainty in the market. Instead, I funded the purchase of Dashcoin out of my own pocket, which cost a substantial amount of money. The purpose of this was incase the trademark challenge didn't work, we just would bury the project and leave it be.
If it wasn't for the patent application, this would have been much more transparent. But we were trying to protect the interests of the investors of the coin and not create unnecessary uncertainty.

Honestly, I always liked the DRK technology but I never invested in it just because of the name. Anything DARK, I don't want to be associated with it. This morning when I saw a change, I have put 1,5 BTC into it. You have just gotten another person on board.
I don't understand the moaning. Why not have the best of both worlds? Wider adoption that will be associated with the normal name and also underground transaction thanks to its anonymity.
People that want to use anonymous coin will use it no matter if the name is Dark, Dash or Tomato coin.
Just my 2 cents.

You think this shitcoin was instamined by accident then? You think your cult leader doesn't hold over a million coins and over a thousand masternodes? For the 3rd time, care to provide proof of your claims? Or are you just going to keep spouting the same bullshit over and over?

Bleating
Keep bleating, you're almost making an impact On a more serious note, how many of you thought that the Darkcoin name would be acceptable to anyone outside the cryptocurrency scene or the darkweb? Be honest, I personally thought it would crash and burn shortly after launch. Why? Because the world is full of sheep who's head would explode if they had an original thought or god forbid challenged the status quo. The crypto scene is better but not by much as you can see from the thread. DRK is being pigeonholed but we all knew it would happen. Evan seems very idealistic to me, and I'm guessing that his hope was that we could explain what the name represents but the brutal truth is as soon as real businesses hear Darkcoin they have made up their mind before another word comes out of your mouth and he now realises this. The name is a heavy weight around the currencies neck and has to be cut loose in order to become more widely and openly accepted. Like someone else mentioned, nothing is changing under the hood the technology stays the same its just a paint job and one desperately needed. My vote is for a change, but only if we get professional input so we don't run into this wall again. This has to be the final rebrand, it has to be done right, with input from financial marketing professionals. They don't have to understand all the crypto details in order to market it but they do need to understand and have experience in financial products marketing. my 2 duffs.

For something to be used as a currency, not just a payment processor, it has to have a HUGE marketcap the name Darkcoin would never reach. The change may be bad for short term, but I strongly believe that it makes this coin a true contestant to Bitcoin.

You two need to get your story straight. Then everyone should give up fiat currencies because so far, they are used to conduct far more trade in the underground/black markets than all crypto's combined. Government issued fiat wasn't marketed towards underground trade, it happened as a result of convenience. Darkcoin rebranded would be in a similar situation.

Again, the name, regardless of what it ends up being, should appeal to the largest majority. The coin's technology doesn't change... the underground markets (if they so desire) will use it if it is functionally deemed as a viable means of transacting.

Evan, is it correct what your other developers, like Vertoe, say? They claim this was a unilateral decision made without their input and now Vertoe has left the team. Also, how do you respond to Vertoe leaving? It seems like a mighty setback to the overall project. Thanks, JL

To the ones who don't think this coin can chalenge BTC.
Whould you accept 100BTC directly from Silkroad, in your personal BTC wallet, linked to your ID (coinbase, Bitstamp)?
