Some steps must be taken which are good enough to protect your systems to be hacked such as not to use unknown exe, use of linux which seems to be less vulnerable to virus.

The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. It is the first distributed timestamping system.

Gosh, the original post has been 7 years old. And still very relevant! There are so many wallets abailable now and in a desire to try things, some users disable their AV. Newbies forget to use virtual machine dry runs. I am guilty of that but have learned my lesson.
Why are you wondering? Is not now appeared many phishing sites, hacked accounts exchanges (Etherdelta). Quite often in the news and telegrams of the groups there are news about burglaries - now this topic is more urgent than ever.

The first person to invent a coldwallet that takes any coin will be very wealthy. I was just complaining in another thread that you have to have so many wallets,  each with its own key, password,  file, each to be airgapped, each to never ever be lost or that's it forever. It's going to be awesome when cold storage technology gets up to speed. Put it on your stick and rest easy, one seed for everything if you lose it. I don't generally use any of the altcoin software wallets except sia, and I read all about it first. That's not to say it can't be compromised in the future but nothing's perfect. I wouldn't dl anything too new, even if it makes me miss out on something.

Arcblock is a revolutionary platform, a comprehensive problem solving, new ideas and design that combines blockchain technology and cloud computing, unlike its predecessors that focus mainly on the “store of value” and “smart contract” built on their blockchain. For the miners is an incentive-driven platform that gives offers aside the traditional services they rendered-‘computing services’- they can also provide new, recyclable component and services. no course to worry about alternative blockchains. Arcblock is here to stay.

Wow! I think this is very interesting! I'm planning to try this one. I don't know what's the mechanics yet that's why I love to read here in the forum I can learn many things from here. I also know there is a risk here but I think it would be better to try this one! Thanks!

I haven't seen anybody post about what would be my biggest worry if I were trying out alternative block chains. I realize this may be perceived as "Gavin is FUD'ding anything that isn't bitcoin!"  (FUD == Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt)  But I think some of you might be forgetting some basic computer security fundamentals in the excitement to be early adopters.

When I first heard about bitcoin, my questions were:

1) Can it possibly work (do the ideas for how it works make sense)?
2) Is it a scam?
3) If it is not a scam, could it open my computer up to viruses/trojans if I run it?

I answered those questions by:

1) Reading and understanding Satoshi's whitepaper.  Then thinking about it for a day or two and reading it again.
2) Finding out everything I could about the project.  I read every forum thread here (there were probably under a hundred threads back then) and read Satoshi's initial postings on the crypto mailing list.
3) Downloaded and skimmed the source code to see if it looked vulnerable to buffer overflow or other remotely exploitable attacks.

If I were going to experiment with an alternative block-chain, I'd go through the same process again. But I'm an old conservative fuddy-duddy.

If you want to take a risk on a brand-new alternative block-chain, I'd strongly suggest that you:

1) Run the software in a virtual machine or on a machine that doesn't contain anything valuable.
2) Don't invest more money or time than you can afford to lose.
3) Use a different passphrase at every exchange site.

Cheers for this overview of certain safety features each one should check for himself before. In exitement one can do quick a couple of things, which in the end cause harm, as one just acted in a rush not checking basic safety features. Cheers!

Gav you have a lot of solid points and its true we all have to be very cautious with our transactions, avoid clicking on unverified links as this is very common with phishing, do not disclose or publicly paste your private keys on public forums and no matter what try to keep a hard copy of your wallet details asides stroing them electronically on your device.
