Just for fun, some statistics concerning the NEM subreddit:

 - The NEM subreddit has 23% of the subscribers the NXT subreddit has.
 - The NEM subreddit has 0.12% of the subscribers the Bitcoin subreddit has.

If we multiply that with the market caps of those two currencies we pretty much exactly get an estimated market cap of $9 million for NEM (for both values).

If we calulacte the market cap of NEM with the size of this thread vs the old NXT thread we get: $6 million for NEM.

What's wrong? These two statements aren't really linked...

• No one but the developers can test the closed alpha.
• The whitepaper won't be published until the beta release.

I think these kind of correlations are more incidental or random than they seem. Indeed, we all know that correlation does not imply causation, still we are very prone to getting fooled by randomness.

I think these kind of correlations are more incidental or random than they seem. Indeed, we all know that correlation does not imply causation, still we are very prone to getting fooled by randomness.

Thanks guys! Yeah, that's a $9,200,000 market cap already... I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

Ideally we'll all get out of the habit of referring to the 'marketcap' of NEM in dollars. NEM is meant to be a currency, not a stock or commodity. When have you heard of people referring to the 'marketcap' of USD or GBP?

If you bought a token then you'd be able to trade that token for NEM come the launch. 1000 of these tokens were issued. This system allows people to trade and establish a price for NEM in a roundabout way prior to launch.

You're right that you can't buy or sell NEM directly right now, but these tokens represent a NEM stake as a kind of IOU.

Yes, you're right, I just checked the other thread out (here). There's no sell orders because the tokens won't be issued until the 30th May; there's nothing to sell yet.

Greed is the single most important driving force behind the crypto movement. As long as we acknowledge that and as long as we manage to contain that that's no real problem at all. It takes effort though.

It would be amazing if reddit subscribers correlated with market cap. I somehow doubt there is a strong causal relationship, though.
