websites without security certificates

I'm not a tech person and because of the experiences I've gotten in the online space and the attendant risks of entering phishing sites, I'm very skeptical when a site has no security certificate, I'm scared I might be hacked the next minute. This has made me instantly some sites no matter the importance of what they present. Am I wrong to have that presumption?
